Mumbai Metropolitan Region Plans Extensive Pod Taxi Network

A comprehensive network of pod taxis is being planned across the Mumbai Metropolitan Region (MMR), extending beyond the initial Bandra Kurla Complex (BKC) project. Thane and Mira-Bhayandar are identified as the next key areas to benefit from this personal rapid transit (PRT) system, aiming to enhance last-mile connectivity and integrate with the expanding metro network.

The Mumbai Metropolitan Region Development Authority (MMRDA) is spearheading these initiatives, which are expected to be implemented on a public-private partnership (PPP) basis. The introduction of pod taxis is envisioned as a modern, efficient, and eco-friendly mode of transportation to address increasing congestion in rapidly urbanizing corridors.

In Thane and Mira-Bhayandar, the pod taxi network aims to improve connectivity between railway and metro stations, thereby easing daily commutes for a significant number of residents. This plan follows the earlier feasibility studies and proposals for similar systems in other parts of the MMR, reflecting a broader strategy to adopt advanced mobility solutions.

Officials have confirmed that feasibility studies for the Thane-Navi Mumbai-Mira Bhayandar corridor have been approved. The MMRDA has been designated as the nodal agency for these projects. A high-level meeting, chaired by the Deputy Chief Minister and Urban Development Minister Eknath Shinde, initiated the evaluation process for an elevated, automated PRT system to boost mobility within the MMR.

Under the PPP model, private concessionaires will be responsible for the design, construction, financing, operations, and maintenance of the pod taxi network. The state government aims to ensure that these projects do not impose a direct financial burden on local municipal corporations. Survey-based studies are being conducted across Thane, Navi Mumbai, and Mira Bhayandar to identify suitable routes.

The pod taxi system utilizes small, automated, battery-powered pods that run on dedicated elevated tracks, separating them from regular road traffic. This design allows for reduced travel times, lower emissions, and a more reliable commuting experience. The pods are expected to carry passengers at speeds of around 60-70 km/h, with advanced features like collision avoidance systems.

The project aligns with Maharashtra’s vision for sustainable and smart transportation, addressing the challenges posed by rapid urban growth and increasing population density. By offering an alternative to private vehicles and improving feeder access to metro and bus routes, the pod taxis are expected to contribute to reduced traffic congestion and improved air quality in the region.

Details regarding specific alignments, station locations, tendering processes, and construction timelines are pending the submission of the MMRDA’s feasibility reports. However, early indications suggest that construction in areas like Mira-Bhayandar could commence by March 2026, with an estimated cost around ₹1,000 crore for that segment. The fare structure is anticipated to be competitive, with preliminary estimates suggesting around ₹30 for a 1-2 km journey.

The successful implementation of pod taxi networks in Thane and Mira-Bhayandar, in addition to the ongoing project in BKC, signifies a commitment to modernizing public transportation infrastructure across the Mumbai Metropolitan Region. The integration of these systems with existing and planned metro lines is seen as crucial for creating a seamless, multi-modal transport ecosystem.
