Delhi to Implement Traffic Curbs on May 24 Due to Janjati Sanskritik Samagam

New Delhi: The Delhi Traffic Police have announced significant traffic restrictions and diversions across Central and North Delhi on Sunday, May 24, 2026, in anticipation of the ‘Janjati Saanskritik Samagam’ event scheduled to be held at the Red Fort. The celebrations are expected to draw approximately one lakh participants and will be accompanied by multiple ‘Shobha Yatras’ converging at the venue, necessitating the imposition of these traffic measures.

Event Details and Processions

The ‘Janjati Sanskritik Samagam’, organized by the Janjati Jaagriti Samiti, aims to celebrate the cultural identity, traditions, and heritage of India’s tribal communities. This year’s event is particularly significant as it commemorates the 150th birth anniversary year of the revered tribal freedom fighter and national icon, Birsa Munda. Organizers anticipate a large turnout, with an estimated 1.5 lakh tribal representatives and participants from across the country expected to attend. Delegations from the Andaman & Nicobar Islands are also slated to participate. To mark the occasion, five grand processions, known as ‘Shobha Yatras’, will commence from various points in the city, including Shyamgiri Mandir, Ramlila Maidan, Rajghat, Qudesia Park, and Ajmeri Gate. These processions will culminate at the Red Fort complex, further contributing to the expected traffic disruptions.

Affected Areas and Diversions

The Delhi Traffic Police advisory indicates that traffic movement is likely to be impacted on several key roads. These include GT Karnal Road from Shastri Park to Tis Hazari, Boulevard Road from Khoya Mandi U-turn to Ring Road under Yudhister Setu, Sham Nath Marg, and Lothian Road. Additionally, restrictions will be in place on Hamilton Road from Pul Dufferin to Kela Ghat, Shyama Prasad Mukherjee Marg from Kodiya Pul to Chhatta Rail, and Netaji Subhash Marg from Delhi Gate Chowk to Chhatta Rail, affecting both carriageways. The advisory also points to potential disruptions on Jawaharlal Nehru Marg from Rajghat to Delhi Gate, Asaf Ali Road from Turkman Gate to Delhi Gate Chowk, and Nishad Raj Marg on both carriageways. Commuters should also anticipate affected traffic on Rajpura Road and adjoining stretches, Ring Road, and Salimgarh Bypass from Chandgi Ram Akhara to the IP Flyover, ITO Chowk, BSZ Marg, DDU Marg, Minto Road, Shradhanand Marg, Chawri Bazar Road, and Desh Bandhu Gupta Marg.

Specific Restrictions for Vehicles

In addition to general traffic diversions, specific restrictions will be imposed on certain types of vehicles. Buses and commercial vehicles will be prohibited from using Ranjeet Singh Flyover and Ranjeet Singh Marg between 12 noon and 4 pm on May 24, with diversions in place via ITO and IP Marg. Traffic movement from Delhi Gate Chowk towards Red Fort and Rajghat will be restricted from 12 noon until 3 am the following day. Commuters heading towards ISBT Kashmere Gate are advised to utilize Ring Road to navigate the affected areas. The advisory also mentions that a significant number of tribal personalities from various fields, including sports, education, and public service, are expected to be honored during the event.

Event Significance and Preparations

The Janjati Sanskritik Samagam is a significant national event celebrating the rich cultural tapestry of India’s tribal communities. The event aims to foster unity, promote cultural exchange, and strengthen social harmony across the nation, all while honoring the legacy of Bhagwan Birsa Munda. Extensive preparations are underway in Delhi to host the expected large number of participants. Accommodation has been arranged at 78 locations across the city, and considerable emphasis is being placed on ensuring adequate drinking water and heat management arrangements due to the summer season. The Janjati Suraksha Manch, an RSS-linked organization, is coordinating the event, working closely with the Delhi Police and local administration to ensure a smooth and safe execution. Union Home Minister Amit Shah is expected to attend the event as the chief guest.

Travel Advice for Commuters

The Delhi Traffic Police urge commuters to plan their journeys in advance and consider using public transport to mitigate potential delays. They are advised to follow the directions of traffic personnel deployed at key intersections and to exercise patience. Travelers heading to airports or railway stations are particularly encouraged to make necessary adjustments to their travel schedules to avoid inconvenience. The advisory will be in effect throughout the day, with the ‘Shobha Yatras’ and the main event at the Red Fort contributing to the traffic congestion.
