A Rapido cab driver was apprehended in Gurugram on Friday for allegedly exposing himself and engaging in an obscene act in the presence of a female passenger inside a moving vehicle. The incident has led to the registration of a First Information Report (FIR) and the confiscation of the vehicle used in the alleged offence.
The Chenab Times has learned that the accused, identified as Vijay Kumar, a 23-year-old resident of Banihari village in Uttar Pradesh’s Prayagraj district, was taken into custody by the police within two hours of the complaint. Authorities have seized the cab and are currently interrogating the driver, who is slated to be produced before a court on Saturday.
According to details provided by the police, the complainant is a software engineer residing in Gurugram. On Thursday morning, around 8:15 a.m., she booked a cab via the Rapido application to commute to her workplace. Shortly after commencing the journey, the driver allegedly unzipped his trousers, exposed himself, and began masturbating while the car was in motion, the police stated.
The passenger, understandably distressed by the driver’s conduct, recorded a video of the incident on her mobile phone. She then demanded that the driver stop the vehicle. Upon her exit from the cab, the accused reportedly fled the scene. However, the complainant promptly alerted the Police Control Room and presented the recorded video evidence to the responding police officers.
An FIR was registered based on the woman’s complaint. The investigation into the matter has been assigned to Inspector Suman, the Station House Officer (SHO) of the women’s police station located in Sector 51. Leveraging technical surveillance and tracing the cab booking details, the police were able to locate and apprehend the accused in the Bhondsi area, demonstrating a swift response to the reported crime.
During initial questioning, the accused reportedly admitted to his employment as a cab driver on the Rapido platform and confirmed picking up the complainant on the morning of the incident. Further investigations are ongoing to ascertain the full extent of the circumstances surrounding the alleged offence.
