SRINAGAR: The Economic Offences Wing (EOW) of the Crime Branch Jammu and Kashmir has apprehended an individual accused of defrauding people of approximately Rs 2 crore through a fictitious investment scheme. The arrest took place in Bengaluru, Karnataka, based on a warrant issued by a Srinagar court.

Information was available with The Chenab Times that the accused, identified as Junaid Ul Islam, son of Nazir Ahmad Baba, a resident of Charar-e-Sharief in Budgam district, had been evading law enforcement for nearly a year. He was apprehended from the Mangammanapalya area of Bengaluru.

The case originated from a preliminary inquiry by the EOW Kashmir, which substantiated allegations of cheating and financial fraud against Ul Islam. He is wanted in connection with FIR No. 07/2025, registered under Section 420 of the Ranbir Penal Code (RPC) at the Police Station EOW Kashmir.

During the investigation, it was revealed that Ul Islam allegedly collected around Rs 2 crore from multiple individuals by presenting himself as an investor associated with an e-commerce company. He reportedly promised investors a monthly return of 10 per cent on their funds. The money was allegedly channeled through various bank accounts.

However, after receiving the substantial sums, the accused reportedly failed to fulfill his commitments and subsequently became unreachable to the investors. The EOW’s findings indicated that the accused dishonestly obtained significant amounts by promising unusually high returns, thus constituting an offense punishable under Section 420 of the RPC, which deals with cheating.

The arrest in Bengaluru was executed in compliance with a warrant issued by the Court of the 4th Additional Munsiff Judicial Magistrate, Srinagar. The EOW Kashmir is continuing its investigation into the matter to uncover the full extent of the fraud and potentially identify other individuals involved.

Authorities have also issued a public advisory, urging citizens to exercise caution and remain vigilant against investment schemes that promise excessively high or guaranteed returns. Such schemes often prove to be fraudulent, leading to financial losses for unsuspecting individuals.
