The Delhi Metro Rail Corporation (DMRC) is intensifying its efforts to bolster last-mile connectivity across its extensive network, with a significant number of commuters now utilizing services like e-autos, bike taxis, public bicycles, and e-rickshaws for travel beyond metro stations.
DMRC Aims for Comprehensive Commuter Solutions
The Delhi Metro Rail Corporation is stepping up efforts to strengthen last-mile connectivity across its network, with nearly 92,000 commuters using services such as e-autos, bike taxis, public bicycles and e-rickshaws every day. DMRC Managing Director Vikas Kumar highlighted the ongoing challenges in ensuring seamless travel beyond metro stations and outlined the corporation’s strategic partnerships with various mobility providers. The objective is to explore and implement newer alternatives to enhance commuting convenience for passengers.
Information was available with The Chenab Times that the corporation is committed to offering a comprehensive ‘bouquet’ of transport choices, allowing commuters to select options based on their convenience and affordability. As of April 30, 2026, approximately 91,987 passengers were daily availing these last-mile connectivity services. This figure breaks down into 55,580 commuters using e-autos, 30,442 utilizing bike taxis and public bicycle-sharing services, and 5,965 opting for e-rickshaws.
The current metro network facilitates a diverse range of services including electric autos, e-rickshaws, pedal bicycles, e-bikes, bike taxis, as well as EV charging and battery-swapping facilities through a multitude of operators. According to Kumar, 1,507 e-autos are presently deployed across the network. An additional 316 vehicles are slated for addition in phases by March 2027, further expanding the fleet.
Further enhancing the accessibility for e-rickshaw users, the corporation has established battery-swapping infrastructure at 14 metro stations. Notable among these are Rithala Metro Station, Rajendra Place Metro Station, Botanical Garden Metro Station, and Vaishali Metro Station, providing essential support for these electric vehicles. The public bicycle-sharing initiative includes an average daily deployment of 212 pedal cycles and 185 battery-operated bicycles, promoting eco-friendly commuting options.
To integrate various modes of transport, DMRC has formed strategic ties with leading operators such as Rapido and Uber for bike taxi and cab services. Additionally, Delhi Transport Corporation buses play a crucial role in supporting metro feeder connectivity, ensuring passengers have reliable options to reach their final destinations. In a significant move towards sustainable transport, DMRC has also initiated operations of hydrogen buses in the Central Vista region through a partnership with Indian Oil Corporation Limited.
The DMRC Managing Director emphasized the integration of dedicated pick-up and drop-off zones for autos, buses, and private vehicles into the station planning process. This measure is intended to mitigate congestion around metro premises and improve traffic flow. However, Kumar also underscored the importance of commuter discipline and adherence to designated lanes as critical factors in maintaining smooth traffic movement near metro stations.
