Delhi Government Intensifies Heatwave Relief with Mobile Units and Cooling Zones

The Delhi government has amplified its efforts to combat the severe heatwave gripping the national capital by deploying Mobile Heat Relief Units and establishing dedicated cooling zones. These initiatives are specifically designed to support commuters, labourers, rickshaw pullers, and other vulnerable populations enduring the extreme weather conditions.

Information was available with The Chenab Times that the comprehensive relief operation is being conducted across all 13 districts of Delhi under the directive of the Revenue Department, with Chief Minister Rekha Gupta overseeing the efforts. Between May 6 and May 23, approximately 2.65 lakh individuals reportedly received assistance from the mobile relief units stationed throughout the city.

As part of the relief campaign, the government has distributed over 1.13 lakh litres of cold drinking water and more than one lakh Oral Rehydration Solution (ORS) packets to mitigate the risks of dehydration and heatstroke. Additionally, 44,646 gamchas (traditional cotton towels) and 30,864 caps have been handed out to provide protection from the intense sun.

“The objective of the Delhi Government is not only to run the administration but also to ensure the safety and convenience of every citizen. During this period of extreme heat, the government is working on the ground with full sensitivity so that no person suffers because of the heat,” stated the Chief Minister. She further emphasised that initiatives like mobile heat relief units and cooling zones demonstrate the government’s commitment to public service and a humanitarian approach. The government is maintaining continuous oversight of the situation and plans to augment relief arrangements as necessary.

Officials confirmed that the deployment locations of the mobile heat relief units are being adjusted daily to ensure that aid reaches densely populated areas and those most affected by the escalating temperatures. This campaign is slated to continue until July.

To offer respite from the soaring temperatures, the administration has also established 14 cooling zones in various districts. These centres are equipped with seating for up to 100 people, cold drinking water, desert coolers, high-speed fans, ORS packets, caps, gamchas, and essential first-aid supplies.

Civil Defence volunteers have been stationed at each cooling zone to assist visitors and manage the operations. Currently, five cooling zones are active in Old Delhi, five in East Delhi, and one each in Northeast, North, Central North, and Central districts. Plans are in place to launch similar facilities in the remaining districts later this week.

“In a metropolitan city like Delhi, where even a glass of cold water is often not easily available to people, these initiatives launched by the government are providing real relief,” the Chief Minister remarked. She added that the public response to these measures has been overwhelmingly positive, and the government remains steadfast in its commitment to safeguarding citizens from the impact of heatwave conditions.

The heatwave has led to a significant surge in temperatures across the city, prompting health advisories from authorities urging citizens to take precautions. The initiatives aim to provide immediate relief and prevent heat-related illnesses, particularly among outdoor workers and those with limited access to cooling facilities. The government’s proactive approach involves monitoring weather patterns and adapting relief strategies accordingly, ensuring that vulnerable sections of the population receive timely support during this critical period.
