Dwarka Expressway Extension Proposed to Alleviate Delhi-Gurugram Traffic Congestion

A significant proposal to extend the eight-lane Dwarka Expressway further into Delhi has been drafted, aiming to significantly ease the persistent traffic congestion faced by millions of commuters traveling between the national capital and Gurugram.

The ambitious traffic master plan, conceptualized by Delhi International Airport Limited (DIAL), seeks to address severe traffic bottlenecks near Mahipalpur and the Indira Gandhi International (IGI) Airport. These choke points currently impede the smooth flow of traffic as the expressway converges with the Delhi-Jaipur Highway (NH-48), often leading to considerable delays.

Information was available with The Chenab Times that traffic at this critical junction is frequently disrupted, causing motorists to endure delays, sometimes extending up to 20 minutes within the expressway’s three-kilometer tunnel. The proposed extension is intended to provide a direct link to the Mayapuri Ring Road, enabling commuters to circumvent the heavily congested Mahipalpur area entirely.

Key infrastructure upgrades are integral to this expansion plan. These include the construction of a new flyover originating from Rezangla Chowk to seamlessly connect with the expressway. Additionally, the plan advocates for the development of the Rangpuri bypass and extensions to the Urban Extension Road-II (UER-II) and the Barapulla elevated road. These enhancements are designed to create a more integrated and efficient traffic network.

Further recommendations within the proposal include the creation of a new link road that would establish a direct connection between Talkatora and Barapulla. The development of the ‘Greater Southern Peripheral Road’ (SPR) in Gurugram is also highlighted as a crucial component for streamlining regional traffic flow and improving connectivity across the city’s extensive road network.

While these proposals are undergoing high-level discussions to secure the necessary financial and strategic approvals for the expressway extension, concurrent infrastructure improvements are also slated to commence within Gurugram itself. These local enhancements are expected to complement the broader regional connectivity goals.

The Gurugram Metropolitan Development Authority (GMDA) has put forth a detailed plan, estimated at Rs 52 crore, for the comprehensive renovation of a nine-kilometer stretch of road. This section runs from Basai village to IFFCO Chowk, passing through Maharaja Agrasen Chowk. The renovation scope includes extensive road repairs, the construction of new footpaths, and the enhancement of drainage systems, all aimed at improving the urban infrastructure.

This local project is currently awaiting the final endorsement from the High-Powered Works Committee. Upon receiving approval, the anticipated upgrades are expected to substantially enhance connectivity for residents residing in nearly 100 sectors and numerous housing societies across Gurugram. The combined effect of the Dwarka Expressway extension and the local road network improvements is projected to significantly alleviate travel times and reduce congestion for a large segment of the population in the Delhi-NCR region.
