Prolonged power outages marred Eid ul Adha celebrations in large parts of Chenab Valley in Jammu and Kashmir as residents faced electricity disruptions on the morning of the festival.
Faults in 33kV and 132kV lines triggered the cuts, leaving many areas without power for several hours during key festive hours.
The Chenab Times has learned that the outages caused significant inconvenience to local residents preparing for Eid prayers and family gatherings. Information available with The Chenab Times indicates that technical issues in the power transmission network were responsible for the disruptions in the region.
Doda MLA Mehraj Malik directly addressed the issue in a public post in Kashmiri language, targeting Chief Minister Omar Abdullah. He wrote, “Omar soub, az aas eid, na aas power, na aas gas, lukav dichayi che power, mgr che chai na poweri. Che chui na shayd fusei, fusei laag nou. Aj chu boud dooh. EID MUBARAK Omar soub.” The message translates to: “Omar Sir, Today was Eid, there was no electricity, no gas, people gave you power but you don’t have power. You don’t have fuse, fix the fuse. Today is auspicious day. Eid Mubarak Omar Sir.”
Chenabi residents in the Chenab Valley, which includes districts like Doda, Ramban, and Kishtwar south of the Kashmir Valley, rely on stable electricity for daily needs and festival observances. The power cuts added to existing challenges from high summer demand and the region’s hilly terrain, where infrastructure constraints often lead to supply issues.
Power reliability has been a recurring concern across Jammu and Kashmir, especially in rural and valley areas served by aging transmission systems. Unscheduled interruptions frequently occur during peak seasons due to faults, overloading, and maintenance requirements.
The MLA’s post reflected public frustration over the absence of basic utilities on a major religious occasion. By highlighting the lack of electricity and LPG gas, Mehraj Malik underscored the gap between public expectations and service delivery under the current administration.
This development occurs as the Union Territory continues efforts to strengthen infrastructure following the re-establishment of an elected government. Local representatives from Chenab Valley have consistently advocated for better power supply to support both household requirements and local economic activities in the region.
Officials often attribute such faults to technical problems in the network, while residents call for faster resolution and preventive maintenance. The Chenab Valley’s strategic location and challenging geography make consistent power supply particularly vital for its population.
