Gurgaon: Five Booked in Dowry Death Case Following Woman’s Demise

Five individuals, including the husband of the deceased, have been booked by the police in Gurgaon in connection with a dowry death case. The woman was found dead under suspicious circumstances at her in-laws’ residence, prompting her family to file a complaint alleging dowry harassment and foul play. The booking of the five individuals follows a formal complaint lodged by the family of the deceased.

While the exact cause of death is yet to be ascertained, the family’s allegations have led to a police investigation into the matter. The complaint suggests that the woman may have been subjected to harassment related to dowry demands. The booking of the husband and other relatives indicates that the investigation will delve into the dynamics of the marital home and any potential pressures faced by the deceased.

The Indian Express reported that the woman’s family has alleged foul play, though preliminary police statements suggest the incident might initially appear as a suicide. This divergence in initial assessments highlights the need for a thorough investigation to ascertain the true circumstances surrounding the woman’s death. The police have registered a case under relevant sections of the law, including those pertaining to dowry death, indicating the seriousness with which the allegations are being treated.

The Pataudi police have registered a case under sections of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita (BNS) related to dowry death. According to reports, the deceased, identified as Somvati alias Sonam, was found at her in-laws’ residence in Jaidev Colony Part 2, Pataudi Jatoli Mandi. Her father, Dhor Singh, a resident of Palwal district, stated in his complaint that Sonam was married to Sahil in 2020 and began experiencing physical abuse within a year of the marriage. He further alleged that Sahil was involved in an extramarital affair, leading to repeated disputes and harassment. A complaint regarding the abuse had been filed previously, after which a compromise was reached, but the harassment reportedly resumed.

Singh informed the police that his daughter had been staying at her parental home for the past month and had returned to her in-laws’ house only a few days prior to her death. He reported receiving a call from his daughter’s mother-in-law stating she was critical and hospitalized. However, upon trying to contact his daughter, a police officer informed him of her death. Singh also alleged finding deep marks on his daughter’s neck, raising suspicions of foul play. He has sought action against Sahil and four other relatives.

Initial information received by the police suggested the possibility of suicide. A team, including forensic officials, inspected the site before the body was sent for a post-mortem examination. The victim reportedly died on the first floor of the house while her husband was sleeping downstairs. Her mother-in-law reportedly discovered her and raised an alarm. However, an officer familiar with the matter noted the absence of visible wounds indicating murder, and stated that prima facie, it appeared to be a suicide. Despite this, a case has been registered based on the family’s complaint alleging dowry harassment, and the investigation is ongoing. The exact cause of death will be determined after the post-mortem report becomes available.

In a separate but related incident, a 25-year-old woman named Kajal died under suspicious circumstances in Garhi Harsaru, Gurgaon. Her family accused her husband, Arun Kumar, of administering a poisonous injection, leading to her death. A syringe was reportedly found in the bathroom. Police have registered a dowry death case against the husband. Kajal’s brother alleged that Arun was addicted to drugs and often fought with Kajal. He claimed that an argument escalated on March 18, after which Kajal’s condition worsened. A post-mortem examination was conducted, and her viscera have been preserved for examination to ascertain the exact cause of death. Police noted the absence of external injury marks on Kajal’s body.
