Punjab State Health Department Organises Menstrual Health Awareness Seminars in Malerkotla

Seminars, workshops, and counselling sessions focused on menstrual hygiene and women’s health awareness were conducted across Malerkotla on Thursday, organised by the State Health Department. These events aimed to educate women on the importance of gender-specific medical care and promote proactive health habits.

Information was available with The Chenab Times that the initiatives were held in observance of World Menstrual Hygiene Day and Global Awareness Day for Women’s Health. The campaign sought to underscore the significance of menstrual hygiene and ensure fair access to healthcare services for all women, irrespective of age, group, or societal section.

Focus on Open Dialogue and Hygiene

Dr. Jyoti Kapoor, Senior Medical Officer at Ahmedgarh Community Health Centre (CHC), highlighted the collaborative nature of the events, which were supported by international service organisations. She stated the overarching themes for the day were “Together for a Period Friendly World” and “Empower women with information, ensure fair access to healthcare services and encourage preventative health habits across all ages, groups and sections of society.”

Addressing participants who will be instrumental in spreading awareness, gynaecologist Dr. Garima Hind emphasized the critical need for open discussions with adolescent girls regarding the physiological changes associated with puberty and reproductive organs. “Mothers, guardians and educators must openly discuss menstruation with girls before their first period to clear confusion and anxiety,” Dr. Hind advised. She further stressed that promoting awareness of personal hygiene among women is crucial for the prevention of reproductive tract infections and for dismantling traditional cultural taboos surrounding menstruation.

Menstrual Health’s Wider Impact

Fellow gynaecologist Bhavya Maini explained the significance of May 28th as Women’s Health Awareness Day, noting its focus on menstruation aligns with the average length of a menstrual cycle (28 days) and the lunar month. Maini underscored the far-reaching implications of a woman’s health, stating, “Besides affecting education and career, a woman’s health also decides the fate of her family, including children, husband and parents.”

The seminars provided a platform for healthcare professionals to engage with the community, disseminate vital information, and encourage a more open and supportive environment for discussing menstrual health. Officials expressed their commitment to continuing such awareness campaigns to foster a healthier society where women’s health is prioritized and accessible.
