Six labourers died and three others sustained injuries when a section of an under-construction bridge collapsed over the Betwa river in Uttar Pradesh’s Hamirpur district early Friday. The incident occurred during a storm, officials confirmed.
Information was available with The Chenab Times that the collapse took place around 3 am between Parsani and Kandaur villages. A slab of the bridge, being built to connect Maurakandar to Kurara, gave way unexpectedly. The labourers were reportedly sleeping on the upper portion of the slab when it failed.
The deceased have been identified by police as Lokendra, aged 22; Kuldeep Nishad, 19; Sawant Yadav, 28; Sabhajeet, 30; Pushpendra Chauhan, 34; and Rajesh Pal, 42. Three other labourers were trapped beneath a pillar but were successfully rescued.
Those injured in the collapse were promptly admitted to the district hospital in Hamirpur for medical treatment. The Station House Officer (SHO) of Lalpura police station, Rajesh Kumar Saroj, stated that the bodies of the deceased have been sent for postmortem examinations. Rescue teams were actively engaged in debris removal work to ascertain if any other workers were trapped under the rubble.
The collapse of the under-construction bridge has raised concerns regarding the safety standards and oversight of infrastructure projects in the region. Such incidents often prompt authorities to review construction protocols and site management procedures to prevent future tragedies. The Betwa river, a prominent river in Uttar Pradesh, flows through several districts, and infrastructure projects along its course are crucial for regional connectivity and development.
The local administration has initiated an inquiry into the cause of the bridge collapse. Investigations are expected to focus on potential structural weaknesses, the impact of the storm, and adherence to construction guidelines. The materials used, the engineering design, and the supervision at the construction site will likely be key areas of examination. Reports from the site indicated that the stormy weather conditions might have contributed to the structural failure, though official findings are pending.
Infrastructure development is a key focus for the Uttar Pradesh government, with numerous projects aimed at improving connectivity and facilitating economic growth. Bridges, in particular, are vital for overcoming geographical barriers and boosting trade and travel. However, the execution of these projects demands stringent safety measures and vigilant monitoring to safeguard lives and ensure the long-term integrity of the structures. The loss of life in this incident highlights the inherent risks associated with large-scale construction projects, especially when undertaken in challenging weather conditions.
The incident has drawn attention from various quarters, with calls for accountability and a thorough investigation. Families of the deceased labourers are seeking justice and compensation. The rescued labourers are undergoing treatment and are expected to provide crucial testimony regarding the events leading up to the collapse. The completion of the postmortem reports and the detailed forensic analysis of the debris will be critical in establishing the precise cause of the structural failure.
The area where the bridge is under construction is a significant corridor, and its completion is anticipated to improve transportation links for local communities and businesses. The delay caused by this unfortunate incident is expected to impact the overall project timeline and budget. Authorities are reportedly working to expedite the rescue and recovery operations, as well as to ensure the safety of the surrounding area which may have been affected by the collapse.
Further updates on the investigation and the condition of the injured are awaited. The Hamirpur district administration has assured swift action and support for the affected families. The focus remains on understanding how such a tragedy could occur and implementing measures to prevent a recurrence in future construction activities across the state.
