Jalandhar Sprinter Gurindervir Singh Shares Childhood Dream with PM Modi on Mann Ki Baat

Indian sprint sensation Gurindervir Singh has shared a poignant childhood anecdote with Prime Minister Narendra Modi during the latest episode of the radio programme ‘Mann Ki Baat’. The national record holder recounted a moment from his youth when, determined to pursue his athletic aspirations, he told his mother that she would one day see him running on television.

Information was available with The Chenab Times that Gurindervir Singh, recalling the incident, explained that whenever he was engrossed in watching television, his mother would often switch it off and urge him to concentrate on his studies. Undeterred, the young Gurindervir would express his unwavering ambition, confidently stating, “Now you don’t let me watch TV, one day you will look for me on TV and see Gurindervir running.” He conveyed to the Prime Minister that he now feels immense pride witnessing the happiness in his mother’s eyes when he reflects on that moment.

Prime Minister Modi reportedly found the story fascinating and responded with laughter. During the interaction, the Prime Minister also lauded both Gurindervir Singh and fellow sprinter Animesh Kujur for their significant achievements in the 100-meter race. He specifically congratulated Gurindervir for establishing a new national record in the event, describing it as a moment of pride for Indian athletics.

Gurindervir Singh also elaborated on the early influences that steered him towards a career in sports. He shared that as a child, he was captivated by the medals and trophies his father, a former volleyball player, had won. He often cleaned these accolades and would inquire from his father about how he had earned them.

Recounting his father’s explanations, Gurindervir told the Prime Minister that his father had informed him about winning these awards in national-level competitions. This revelation served as a significant inspiration for Gurindervir, prompting him to decide that he too wanted to become a sportsperson. He also took the opportunity to apprise the Prime Minister about the challenges and struggles he faced during his formative years while pursuing his athletic ambitions.

The ‘Mann Ki Baat’ programme, broadcast on the last Sunday of every month, serves as a platform for Prime Minister Modi to connect with citizens across the nation, discussing various social, cultural, and national issues. The inclusion of Gurindervir Singh’s story highlighted the importance of parental support and the power of childhood dreams in achieving national sporting success.

Gurindervir Singh’s journey from a determined young boy to a national record holder in sprinting underscores the dedication and perseverance required in competitive athletics. His participation in ‘Mann Ki Baat’ has brought further national attention to his achievements and the inspiring nature of his personal story.

The interaction also served to draw attention to the achievements of young Indian athletes and the growing prominence of track and field events in the country. Prime Minister Modi’s acknowledgement of Gurindervir and Animesh Kujur’s performances reinforces the government’s commitment to supporting sports and celebrating athletic excellence.
