Himachal Pradesh Governor Launches Mini Marathon for Environment and Drug-Free State

Shimla, Himachal Pradesh – On the occasion of World Environment Day, Himachal Pradesh Governor flagged off a mini marathon from the Ridge Ground, urging for collective action towards a clean environment and a drug-free state. The event, jointly organised by the Himachal Pradesh Police, Department of Environment, Science, Technology and Climate Change, and the state’s Census Directorate, aimed to raise awareness on critical environmental and social issues.

Information was available with The Chenab Times that the Governor, addressing the participants, highlighted the privilege of residing in Himachal Pradesh, a state endowed with a pristine environment and clean air, factors conducive to a healthy lifestyle. He stressed the imperative of preserving and safeguarding the state’s natural heritage for future generations, stating that development should not come at the expense of environmental integrity.

The Governor articulated that environmental protection and the establishment of a drug-free society form the bedrock of a better future. He expressed significant concern over the escalating challenge of drug abuse and commended the proactive efforts of the Himachal Pradesh Police in disseminating awareness through innovative outreach initiatives. According to details received by The Chenab Times, he emphasized that safeguarding the younger generation from the perils of narcotics is a shared responsibility, achievable only through the unified efforts of all societal strata.

The mini marathon, themed “Clean Environment and Chitta-Free Life,” witnessed substantial participation from individuals across Himachal Pradesh and its adjoining states. Personnel from the Central Armed Police Forces, students from various educational institutions, senior citizens, and specially-abled participants joined the run in significant numbers. The event was conceptualized to educate the public on the pervasive threat of drug abuse, concurrently promoting environmental conservation, public health, and social responsibility.

Furthermore, the marathon served as a platform to inform citizens about the ongoing self-enumeration campaign being conducted by the Census Department, underscoring the importance of accurate data collection for planning and development. The Governor encouraged citizens to embrace cleanliness as an integral part of their daily lives and to actively contribute to the creation of a healthier and more sustainable society.

Earlier in the proceedings, the Governor administered a pledge to all attendees, reinforcing their commitment to maintaining cleanliness, protecting the environment, and adopting a drug-free lifestyle. Following the marathon, the Governor visited an exhibition curated by the Department of Environment, Science, Technology and Climate Change, where he acknowledged and appreciated the ongoing efforts to foster environmental consciousness among the populace. He also inscribed his support on the “Harit Himachal and Chitta-Mukt Himachal” campaign wall, signifying a personal reaffirmation of his dedication to these crucial causes.

Among the dignitaries present at the event were Shimla Mayor Surender Chauhan; Director General of Police Ashok Tiwari; Sushil Kumar Singla, Secretary, Department of Environment, Science, Technology and Climate Change; and Director of Census Operations Deep Shikha Sharma. Their presence underscored the collaborative approach taken by various government bodies and law enforcement agencies in addressing these vital issues.

The event’s dual focus on environmental stewardship and combating drug addiction highlights the interconnectedness of ecological well-being and societal health. The administration’s emphasis on public participation in social campaigns, particularly in the fight against narcotics, signals a recognition of community engagement as a powerful tool for social change. The inclusion of the Census Department’s enumeration campaign integrated a civic duty with the day’s environmental and social messaging, aiming for a holistic approach to community development and awareness.

The marathon route, spanning a significant portion of Shimla town, provided a visible platform for the campaign’s message, drawing public attention and encouraging broader dialogue. The participation of diverse age groups and abilities aimed to promote inclusivity and send a unified message across different segments of society. This initiative aligns with broader national efforts to promote a healthier environment and tackle the pressing issue of substance abuse, particularly among the youth.

The Governor’s call for collective action resonated through the speeches and the participation in the marathon, emphasizing that such large-scale campaigns require sustained effort and commitment from every citizen. The Department of Environment, Science, Technology and Climate Change showcased various initiatives and technologies aimed at promoting sustainable practices and reducing environmental impact, offering practical insights to attendees.

The emphasis on a “Chitta-Free Life” reflects a growing concern over synthetic drug abuse in the region and the collaborative efforts being made by the police and civil administration to curb its spread. The success of such awareness drives is often measured by the sustained change in public behaviour and the reduction in reported incidents related to drug abuse and environmental degradation. The Himachal Pradesh government continues to prioritize initiatives that foster a healthier living environment and a more responsible citizenry.

The event concluded with a renewed sense of purpose among participants and organizers, fostering a shared commitment to environmental protection and the creation of a drug-free Himachal Pradesh. The integration of environmental themes with social awareness campaigns is a strategic approach by the state government to address multifaceted challenges effectively.
