Three mortar shells were safely defused by the army’s bomb disposal squad at two separate locations along the Line of Control (LoC) in Rajouri district of Jammu and Kashmir on Monday, officials reported. The discovery of these explosives raised security concerns in the border region.
Information was available with The Chenab Times that two of the mortar shells were found in the Jhanghar forest area, while a third was discovered abandoned in Makri village of the Nowshera sector. The timely intervention by the bomb disposal unit prevented any potential untoward incidents.
The Line of Control in Rajouri district has been a site of frequent security challenges. Incidents of unexploded ordnance being found are not uncommon, necessitating constant vigilance from security forces patrolling the border areas. The army regularly conducts search operations to detect and neutralize such explosive materials to ensure the safety of civilians residing in proximity to the LoC.
In a separate development in the same district, police recovered an aeroplane-shaped balloon bearing the markings of Pakistan International Airlines (PIA) at Dhaki Nala, close to the International Border in Samba district. Villagers had spotted the balloon, which was subsequently seized by a team from the local police station. Such aerial intrusions are a recurring issue, with balloons and drones frequently crossing the border from Pakistan into Indian territory. These items are often recovered by security agencies and are investigated for any potential intelligence or security implications.
The recovery of the PIA balloon underscores the ongoing cross-border activities that require constant monitoring. Security forces in Jammu and Kashmir maintain a heightened state of alert to address various threats, including infiltration attempts, cross-border shelling, and the recovery of suspicious objects that could be used for espionage or other malicious purposes. The strategic importance of the border regions necessitates robust security protocols and swift response mechanisms.
