SRINAGAR: The Directorate of School Education Kashmir (DSEK) has issued a directive to all government and private recognised educational institutions across the Kashmir valley, mandating the suspension of all in-house examinations, internal assessments, and term examinations during the observance of Muharram-ul-Haram. The order affects the period between June 23 and June 27, 2026.
Information was available with The Chenab Times indicating that the decision has been taken in consideration of the approaching Islamic month of Muharram, a period of significant religious observance. This directive aims to ensure that students and educators can fully participate in the solemn commemorations without the pressure of academic evaluations.
The official order, released by the Director of School Education, Kashmir, explicitly states that no examinations of any nature are to be conducted for any class during the specified five-day window. This measure is intended to acknowledge the religious and cultural importance of Muharram, allowing for uninterrupted participation in related activities.
The Directorate has further emphasized that strict adherence to this order is expected. It has also issued a stern warning that any deviation from or non-compliance with these instructions will be met with disciplinary action, to be initiated under the purview of relevant rules and regulations governing educational institutions in the Union Territory.
The decision to reschedule or halt examinations during periods of religious significance is not unprecedented in the region. Muharram is the first month of the Islamic calendar and is marked by Muslims worldwide as a time of mourning and remembrance, particularly for the martyrdom of Imam Hussein, the grandson of Prophet Muhammad, at the Battle of Karbala. The period culminates in Ashura, the tenth day of Muharram, which holds particular significance.
