Zubair Firdous, a mountaineer from Baramulla in Jammu and Kashmir, has completed expeditions to 200 alpine lakes across the region and Ladakh. The achievement marks a significant milestone in his more than a decade-long journey of trekking, exploration, and mountain travel.
A mountaineer from Baramulla district in Jammu and Kashmir has completed expeditions to 200 alpine lakes, a milestone that highlights years of trekking through some of the region’s most remote mountain landscapes. Zubair Firdous reached his 200th alpine lake, Ditap Nag, after a journey that began in 2014.
According to details received by The Chenab Times, Firdous is an MBA graduate from the University of Kashmir and a resident of the Azad Gunj area of Baramulla town. He developed an interest in trekking and mountaineering more than a decade ago and later founded Alpine Hikers Baramulla, a trekking club focused on promoting adventure activities and responsible mountain travel.
Firdous’ alpine lake expeditions have been carried out across Jammu and Kashmir and Ladakh. He identified several landmark achievements during his journey, including reaching Choharnag IV as his 50th alpine lake, Lokut Sar in Tosamaidan as his 100th, Diya Sar in Hirpora as his 150th, and Ditap Nag as his 200th.
The achievement is notable because many alpine lakes in the Himalayan region are located in difficult terrain that often requires long-distance trekking through mountain passes, meadows, glaciers, and isolated valleys. According to the information shared, most expeditions involved trekking distances of 20 to 30 kilometres or more.
The milestone is being viewed as a significant achievement in Kashmir’s adventure and mountaineering community. Alpine lakes are among the most remote natural features in the region, and reaching them requires extensive planning, physical endurance, and familiarity with high-altitude conditions.

The accomplishment also draws attention to the growing interest in trekking and adventure tourism in Jammu and Kashmir. Supporters say such expeditions help showcase the region’s natural landscapes while encouraging outdoor recreation and environmental awareness.
Following the completion of his 200th alpine lake expedition, Firdous has continued his explorations. His total count has now increased to 202 alpine lakes, according to the information provided.
Firdous stated that trekking and mountaineering have played a transformative role in his life by helping him remain connected to nature and disciplined pursuits. He said every expedition undertaken during the journey was self-funded and driven by a passion for exploration.
Speaking on the occasion, Firdous described the milestone as one of the most important achievements of his life and dedicated it to the people of Kashmir. He expressed gratitude to his family for their support and acknowledged the contributions of his teammates from Alpine Hikers Baramulla.
He also said he hopes his journey will encourage young people in Kashmir to explore the mountains responsibly and develop an appreciation for the region’s natural heritage. In addition, he appealed to the Jammu and Kashmir administration to facilitate the reopening and promotion of trekking destinations across the Valley to support adventure tourism and mountaineering activities.
