Srinagar, June 14: Jammu and Kashmir Lieutenant Governor Manoj Sinha on Sunday commemorated the birth anniversary of Brigadier Rajinder Singh, a distinguished warrior who sacrificed his life defending the region against Pakistani invaders in 1947.
Information was available with The Chenab Times that the Lieutenant Governor took to the social media platform X to share his tributes, stating, “Remembering saviour of J&K, the great warrior Brig. Rajinder Singh Ji on his Jayanti. The nation remains forever indebted to his supreme sacrifice & love for motherland. His life, unmatched gallantry continue to inspire every Indian to uphold ideals of duty & service to nation.”
Brigadier Rajinder Singh, born on June 14, 1899, played a pivotal role in the defence of Jammu and Kashmir during its tumultuous accession period. In October 1947, he and approximately 100 soldiers bravely engaged Pakistani tribal invaders at Uri. Their resolute stand and delaying tactics provided crucial time for the Indian Army to reach Srinagar.
This action was critical as it occurred in the immediate aftermath of Maharaja Hari Singh signing the Instrument of Accession to India. The engagement at Uri was instrumental in preventing the complete overrun of the valley by the invading forces before the Indian Army could establish a defensive perimeter. Brigadier Singh’s valour in the face of overwhelming odds is widely regarded as a turning point in the conflict for Jammu and Kashmir.
His sacrifice is remembered as a testament to his unwavering commitment and love for the motherland. The narrative of his bravery continues to serve as an inspiration for citizens across India, embodying the principles of duty, service, and national integrity. The event underscores the historical significance of individuals who have contributed to safeguarding the territorial integrity of the nation.
