Punjab: Hoshiarpur Granthi Dies by Suicide Following Harassment, Six Arrested

In Hoshiarpur district, Punjab, a 28-year-old granthi has died by suicide after allegedly consuming poison, following a dispute over the sharing of income generated from religious services. The police have arrested six individuals in connection with the incident and have registered a case on charges of abetment to suicide and criminal conspiracy.

Hoshiarpur Granthi’s Death Sparks Investigation

Information was available with The Chenab Times that the deceased, Jaspal Singh, was a granthi who also performed Sri Akhand Path and Sehaj Path at various gurdwaras. The tragedy unfolded after an alleged confrontation with a group of individuals who demanded a share of his earnings from religious services.

According to the complaint filed by the deceased’s father, Jagdish Singh, the incident occurred on June 9. A group of persons reportedly approached Jaspal Singh and insisted on receiving a portion of the income derived from his religious duties in the Mahilpur area. When Jaspal Singh reportedly refused to comply with their demands, the individuals are alleged to have threatened and humiliated him, issuing warnings of severe repercussions should he not agree.

Following this alleged harassment, Jaspal Singh’s family claims he remained under significant mental distress. On the evening of June 12, he reportedly consumed a poisonous substance, leading to his death.

Police Action and Legal Proceedings

Acting promptly on the complaint lodged by Jagdish Singh, the Mahilpur police initiated an investigation. A case has been registered under the relevant sections of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita, which include charges related to abetment to suicide and criminal conspiracy, among other offences.

So far, six accused individuals have been apprehended by the authorities. The police stated that efforts are underway to identify and locate other persons who have been named in connection with the case. The investigation is ongoing as authorities work to piece together the full sequence of events leading to the granthi’s death.
