LAREDO, Texas – A private jet carrying six individuals crashed onto a highway in Laredo, Texas, late Tuesday night, resulting in one fatality and prompting a dramatic rescue operation. The aircraft caught fire upon impact on Loop 20, near the Texas-Mexico border, causing significant disruption as motorists stopped to assist those trapped inside.
Video footage from the scene depicted rescuers and bystanders attempting to breach the aircraft’s cockpit window with tools including a sledgehammer and shovel to extricate passengers. Witnesses reported seeing individuals trapped within the burning plane as emergency crews worked to free survivors. The plane sustained severe damage, appearing partially fractured following the crash.
Authorities confirmed that six people were on board the aircraft, and tragically, one person was pronounced dead at the scene. Several other individuals sustained injuries and were transported for medical attention. No injuries were reported among those traveling on the highway at the time of the incident.
Preliminary reports suggest the aircraft may have encountered a mechanical issue prior to the crash, though the precise cause remains under investigation by aviation authorities, including the National Transportation Safety Board (NTSB) and the Federal Aviation Administration (FAA). According to the Laredo International Airport Director, the airport received an alert shortly before 10 p.m. local time indicating the Cessna Citation was experiencing mechanical difficulties and was low on fuel. Communication with the tower was lost, and the plane crash-landed a few miles from the airport.
The damaged jet came to rest on the Loop 20 highway, some distance from the Laredo International Airport. Dashcam footage shared on social media captured the aircraft careening down the highway, striking a light post before its final impact. The jet was heading to Austin, Texas.
The NTSB has dispatched investigators to the crash site. The investigation into the incident will involve examining the pilot, the aircraft, and the operating environment. A preliminary report is expected within 30 days, with a final report detailing the probable cause anticipated in 12 to 24 months.
