A First Information Report (FIR) has been lodged against a Samajwadi Party (SP) MLA in Uttar Pradesh for allegedly posting objectionable content targeting Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) Member of Parliament and actor Kangana Ranaut. The case was registered following a complaint by a local BJP leader.
Information was available with The Chenab Times that a video circulated widely on social media purportedly featured Raniganj SP MLA Rakesh Kumar Verma making disparaging remarks against Ms. Ranaut. The video’s virality prompted district president of the BJP Yuva Morcha, Anshuman Singh, to submit a formal complaint to the authorities. Mr. Singh alleged that the SP MLA had directed inappropriate comments towards the woman parliamentarian.
The Cyber Police Station in-charge, Rajeev Kumar Tiwari, confirmed that based on the submitted complaint and the evidence presented, the police proceeded to register an FIR against MLA Rakesh Kumar Verma. The FIR has been registered under relevant sections of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita (BNS), including Section 352 which pertains to intentional insult intended to provoke a breach of peace. Additionally, provisions of the Information Technology Act are also being applied in the case.
The alleged incident highlights the escalating political discourse and the sensitivities surrounding public statements made by elected officials, particularly those involving prominent public figures. Ms. Ranaut, who has recently been nominated to the Lok Sabha from Himachal Pradesh, has often been at the centre of political discussions and controversies.
The registration of the FIR signifies the authorities’ action in response to the complaint, initiating a formal investigation into the allegations. Further details regarding the exact nature of the alleged remarks and the evidence collected are expected to emerge as the investigation progresses. The Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita, which replaced the Indian Penal Code, aims to modernise criminal laws in India, and charges under its sections are being rigorously applied.
Police officials stated that the investigation is currently underway, and further actions will be determined based on the findings of their inquiry. The case underscores the legal frameworks in place to address online defamation and offensive content, particularly when directed at public servants and elected representatives.
This development adds another layer to the ongoing political exchanges between the Samajwadi Party and the ruling BJP in Uttar Pradesh. The MLA’s alleged comments, if proven, could lead to significant repercussions under the newly enacted BNS and IT Act, emphasizing the growing scrutiny of speech in the digital age, especially for individuals in public office.
The political landscape in Uttar Pradesh has frequently seen heated exchanges between rival parties, and this incident is likely to fuel further debate. The legal process will now determine the veracity of the allegations and any subsequent consequences for the MLA.
While the investigation is in its early stages, the registration of an FIR signals a formal step towards addressing the complaint. The public interest in such matters, given the involvement of a Member of Parliament, is considerable.
