Leader of the Opposition Udhayanidhi Stalin has alleged that Tamil Nadu has been plunged into a “disaster” under the Tamilaga Vettri Kazhagam (TVK)-led government. He stated that it is the responsibility of every Dravida Munnetra Kazhagam (DMK) member to rescue the state from this “catastrophe.” The DMK leader claimed that the law and order situation in the state has deteriorated significantly under the TVK government, pushing it into an abyss.
Speaking at marriage functions of DMK functionaries in Thanjavur and Pudukottai districts on Sunday, June 28, 2026, Mr. Udhayanidhi described the ruling TVK government as a “sofa model” administration, which he alleged consistently provided a “ready-made” response by blaming the previous DMK regime for any prevailing problems.
Tamil Nadu is currently experiencing a series of power cuts across various regions, with farmers being the most affected, Mr. Udhayanidhi stated. He highlighted that farmers are protesting against the Kuruvai special package announced by Chief Minister C. Joseph Vijay, deeming it insufficient. However, the Chief Minister has reportedly belittled the farmers’ protests, alleging they are instigated by the DMK.
Mr. Udhayanidhi further pointed out that the Mettur dam, which was opened on June 12 annually for irrigation in the delta region during the DMK’s previous five-year rule from 2021, has not seen its gates opened this year under the TVK government. This has caused concern among the agricultural community.
The people of Tamil Nadu are beginning to recognize the shortcomings of the TVK government, which Mr. Udhayanidhi claimed engaged in “horse trading” immediately after assuming power. He added that the Chief Minister did not provide any substantive replies in the Assembly when the DMK raised critical issues, including the deteriorating law and order situation.
Information was available with The Chenab Times that the TVK government’s “false image” has been completely shattered within its first month of governance. Mr. Udhayanidhi urged the Chief Minister and his administration to focus on constructive measures rather than targeting the opposition.
In a separate development, Udhayanidhi Stalin had previously criticized the TVK government for recurring power cuts and rising crimes against women, even after the formation of the Singappen Special Force. He also raised concerns over industrial investments shifting from Tamil Nadu to neighboring states. While welcoming the government’s decision to continue welfare programs like the Kalaignar Magalir Urimai Thogai and expressing concern over the potential discontinuation of the Naan Mudhalvan program, Mr. Udhayanidhi extended birthday greetings to Chief Minister C. Joseph Vijay.
The political discourse has also seen Udhayanidhi Stalin accusing the TVK government of lacking majority voter support and criticizing its reliance on legislators from parties previously accused of corruption. He has urged the continuation of welfare schemes initiated by the DMK and has voiced strong criticism against the Congress party for backing the TVK government, stating that the DMK cadre was instrumental in the Congress winning several seats. He also attributed the rise of the BJP in India to the Congress.
Further adding to the political controversy, Udhayanidhi Stalin had previously accused the TVK government and its allies of attempting to “saffronise” the legacy of the Tamil poet Thiruvalluvar, drawing parallels to alleged actions during the DMK’s rule. The TVK government, however, has maintained that Thiruvalluvar should not be linked to any particular religion.
The Tamil Nadu Assembly has witnessed direct political confrontations between the TVK government and the Leader of Opposition. Issues ranging from power cuts and welfare schemes to the Tamil Anthem and industrial safety have been debated, with Mr. Udhayanidhi attempting to highlight governance failures, while the TVK government has defended its record and accused the opposition of politicizing issues.
