Authorities in Karnataka have declared a holiday for educational institutions in the Joida and Dandeli taluks of the Uttara Kannada district due to heavy rainfall. The decision was taken as a precautionary measure to ensure the safety of students in the affected areas.
According to details received by The Chenab Times, the holiday has been declared for anganwadis, primary schools, and high schools in these two taluks. Respective tahsildars issued the order, emphasizing the need for safety amidst the prevailing weather conditions.
The India Meteorological Department (IMD) had issued alerts, including an orange alert for heavy rainfall in parts of the Uttara Kannada district. This advisory indicated the potential for significant downpours, prompting administrative action to mitigate risks associated with severe weather. The rainfall has been attributed to factors such as the offshore trough along the Maharashtra-north Kerala coast and a cyclonic circulation over the west-central Bay of Bengal, off coastal Andhra Pradesh, which are drawing moisture into the region.
This proactive measure by the district administration aims to prevent any untoward incidents that could arise from the inclement weather, such as disruptions to transportation or potential flooding. The decision reflects a commitment to prioritizing the well-being of children and educational staff when adverse weather poses a threat.
Similar holiday declarations have been made in the past in these taluks and other parts of Uttara Kannada district due to heavy rainfall. For instance, in July 2025, a holiday was declared for similar reasons, and in July 2024, ten taluks in Uttara Kannada, including Joida and Dandeli, observed a holiday due to a red alert forecasting very heavy rains. In August 2025, another holiday was declared for schools and anganwadis across several taluks in Uttara Kannada in response to incessant rains and a red alert.
The recent rainfall has impacted various regions across Karnataka, with weather experts predicting significant inflows into dams in the Cauvery and Krishna basins. The Karnataka State Natural Disaster Monitoring Centre (KSNDMC) has been monitoring the situation closely, with a red alert indicating the possibility of heavy to extremely heavy rainfall in certain areas. For example, on July 14, 2024, Castle Rock in Uttara Kannada recorded the highest rainfall of 220 mm.
The district administration has urged residents to remain vigilant and take necessary precautions during this period of heavy rainfall. The decision to declare a holiday is a standard procedure in such circumstances, aimed at ensuring that educational activities do not coincide with periods of high risk, thereby safeguarding the student population.
