Thirty-four cattle have drowned in a drain in Gujjarpura, Ajnala, after getting trapped in the overflowing water. The incident has led to widespread distress among the local Gujjar community, who rely on their livestock for their livelihood. Cattle grazers are accusing the local administration of negligence and demanding compensation from the Punjab government, as well as accountability for the officials responsible.
Information was available with The Chenab Times indicating that a total of thirty-eight cattle became stuck in the drain, which had filled with rainwater and become overgrown with wild vegetation. Despite efforts by locals, only four of the animals could be rescued. The loss of 34 cattle represents a significant blow to the economic stability of the graziers.
Community Accuses Administration of Negligence
Members of the Gujjar community, who are primarily cattle grazers in the region, voiced their frustration over the apparent lack of upkeep for local drainage systems. They stated that despite annual allocations of funds for drain cleaning, no cleaning teams have been visible in the area. The condition of the drain, described as slippery and choked with wild growth, has been a recurring issue, contributing to such tragic incidents.
Sarwan, a grazer from the affected community, expressed his deep dismay. “We lost our source of livelihood,” he stated, highlighting the devastating impact of the loss. “The death of 34 cattle heads has shaken us. We do not know how to cope with the situation.” The grazers feel that their pleas for improved infrastructure and maintenance have gone unheeded by the authorities.
Demand for Compensation and Accountability
The affected community is calling for prompt action from the Punjab government. They have demanded adequate compensation for the livestock lost, recognizing the severe financial hardship this incident has imposed upon them. Furthermore, they are urging for an inquiry into the matter to hold negligent officials accountable for their failure to maintain public infrastructure, which they believe directly led to this tragedy.
Locals have pointed out that similar incidents have occurred in Ajnala villages in the past, underscoring a systemic issue with the maintenance of drainage systems in the area. They argue that the government’s allocation of funds for drain cleaning has been ineffective, as the results of these expenditures are not evident on the ground. The residents emphasize the urgent need for the government to prioritize the cleaning and maintenance of drains throughout Ajnala to prevent future disasters.
