Authorities have issued a fresh traffic advisory for the Jammu-Srinagar National Highway (NH-44), urging commuters to exercise caution due to forecast rainfall, reduced visibility, and the potential for landslides. The advisory covers August 28 and 29, following recent days of significant traffic congestion, particularly between the Ramban and Banihal stretches.
The Chenab Times has learned that several factors are contributing to the anticipated travel disruptions. Maintenance work at the Mehar Tunnel on NH-44 and ongoing traffic regulation efforts near Banihal are expected to impede the smooth flow of vehicles. Officials have also warned of the increased risk of shooting stones, mudslides, and slippery road conditions along vulnerable sections of the highway, especially between Ramban and Banihal.
Alternative Routes and Travel Advisories
In response to these conditions, commuters planning journeys towards Doda, Kishtwar, and Bhaderwah have been advised to opt for the older route via Patnitop, bypassing NH-44. Motorists are also being cautioned against making unnecessary stops in areas identified as landslide-prone, with specific warnings issued for stretches near Ramban and Banihal.
To mitigate risks associated with poor visibility and the danger of falling stones, passenger vehicles and light motor vehicles (LMVs) are strongly encouraged to undertake their journeys during daylight hours. Night travel is being discouraged. The movement of all vehicles on the highway will remain contingent upon prevailing weather conditions and the status of road clearance operations.
Traffic Cut-Off Timings Implemented
Specific cut-off timings have been established for private vehicles to manage traffic flow and ensure safety. Traffic originating from Nagrota and heading towards Srinagar will be permitted to travel only between 7 a.m. and 12 noon. Vehicles departing from Jakheni in Udhampur for Srinagar will have a window between 8 a.m. and 1 p.m. Similarly, traffic moving from Qazigund towards Jammu is scheduled between 11:30 a.m. and 5:30 p.m. No vehicle will be allowed to cross the designated points beyond these prescribed cut-off times.
Authorities have emphasized that overloading of both passenger and goods vehicles will result in strict enforcement action. The movement of heavy vehicles, including load carriers, will be managed dynamically based on real-time road and weather assessments.
The Jammu and Kashmir Traffic Police are urging all commuters to stay updated on the latest road conditions. Travelers are advised to consult the Traffic Police’s social media channels or contact the Traffic Control Unit before commencing their journeys. Continuous monitoring of weather and road conditions will dictate the ongoing accessibility of NH-44.
