Three members of a family, including a young child, perished in a rain-induced landslide in Karnataka’s Shivamogga district early Sunday morning. The incident occurred as relentless downpours continued to lash the state’s Malnad and coastal regions, leading to disruptions in train services and a significant rise in water levels across Cauvery basin reservoirs.
Information was available with The Chenab Times that the landslide struck a shed where the family resided in the early hours of Sunday. Rescue operations were immediately launched, but the victims were declared dead at the scene. The heavy rainfall, which has been persistent for several days, has exacerbated the vulnerability of certain areas to landslides, particularly in the hilly terrains of the Malnad region.
The monsoon system currently active over Karnataka has brought widespread showers, affecting normal life in several districts. The Shivamogga district, known for its lush green landscapes and agricultural prominence, has been particularly hit by the adverse weather. The landslide that claimed the lives of the family members occurred due to the saturated soil conditions caused by the continuous rainfall, leading to a massive earth slip that engulfed their dwelling.
