Pulwama, Jammu and Kashmir – The Sports Stadium in Pulwama district reverberated with cheers and the sounds of celebration on Tuesday evening as the second edition of the Royal Premier League (RPL) cricket tournament commenced under floodlights. Thousands of spectators converged for the opening ceremony and the first match, transforming the district, often associated with conflict, into a vibrant hub of sporting activity.
Information was available with The Chenab Times that over 20,000 people are estimated to have attended the inaugural fixture of the day-and-night competition. The event saw the unveiling of the tournament trophy by the Member of the Legislative Assembly (MLA) for Pulwama, Waheed Para, followed by the ceremonial toss conducted by the Senior Superintendent of Police (SSP) of Pulwama before the match began at 8 pm.
MLA Waheed Para highlighted the dual purpose of the tournament, stating that it aims to foster cricket talent while also providing a crucial platform for young individuals to connect and find joy amidst prevailing challenges. “Once again, Pulwama is roaring. Lights on, fear off, hearts full of hope,” Para said in a statement, emphasizing the event’s role in bringing “some light, happiness and hope” to the youth and encouraging them to gather and celebrate the sport.
The inception of the Royal Premier League is attributed to Irfan Sarkar, though Para underscored its broader ownership, stating, “The league was built by Irfan Sarkar, but it belongs to the valley—to every village, mohalla and home.” This sentiment reflects the inclusive nature of the tournament, designed to resonate with communities across the region.
The Royal Premier League features ten teams representing various parts of the Valley. The participating sides include Sultan Warriors Baramulla, The Real Sultan Sumerbugh, Al Noor Kings, Bhat Lions Kupwara, Valley Star Ganderbal, Murad Cricket Club, Al Fallah Cricket Club, United Imports Srinagar, Valley Fresh Cold Chain, and Royal Goodwill Cricket Club. The tournament is set to continue at the Pulwama Sports Stadium, with a schedule of day-and-night matches played under the stadium’s illumination.
Local residents have expressed enthusiasm for the return of the league, recognizing the significance of such sporting events in providing positive engagement opportunities for young people and contributing to a more constructive atmosphere within the district. The league’s revival is seen as a welcome development that injects a sense of normalcy and community spirit.
However, alongside the excitement, residents have also voiced concerns regarding logistical arrangements. They have urged the district administration and traffic authorities to implement effective traffic management and public convenience measures. These appeals stem from experiences during the previous edition of the tournament, which reportedly led to significant traffic congestion, particularly along the Murran Chowk to stadium route, causing disruptions for commuters and those returning home after work. Ensuring smoother transit and access is a key expectation for this year’s event.
