SRINAGAR: A modern abattoir project, estimated to cost ₹31 crore, has been revived in Srinagar, aiming to introduce systematic testing and certification for meat sold within the city. The initiative, initially conceived in the 2011-12 fiscal year, faced delays but has now been re-energized by the Srinagar Municipal Corporation.
Information was available with The Chenab Times that the facility will be instrumental in testing sheep intended for slaughter, ensuring they are free from diseases. The abattoir will also provide halal certification for meat distributed within Srinagar. Officials have assured that the project, slated for completion in two years, is now targeted for completion within eighteen months.
The Chief Minister, in his remarks, highlighted the project’s importance amidst recurring complaints regarding the quality of meat available in Srinagar over the past two years. He noted instances where poor-quality meat was allegedly being sold to consumers. The revived initiative seeks to reintroduce a system where inspected meat carries an official stamp, assuring the public of its good quality and safety for consumption.
Discussions around a proposed film festival in Jammu and Kashmir have also taken place, with the Chief Minister clarifying its primary objective. He emphasized that the festival is not intended to attract major Bollywood or Hollywood stars but rather to provide local audiences and aspiring filmmakers with exposure to diverse forms of cinema. The focus will be on screening films not typically available to the local populace and conducting workshops in filmmaking disciplines such as editing, directing, cinematography, and music.
The Chief Minister also stated that the festival aims to foster local technical expertise, reducing the reliance on external technicians for film productions in Kashmir. This development is expected to create employment opportunities within the region by enabling local individuals to acquire skills in various filmmaking roles.
Regarding other developmental projects, the Chief Minister provided an update on the All India Institute of Medical Sciences (AIIMS) facility in Srinagar. Construction is reportedly progressing rapidly, with one block anticipated to become operational within the current year, offering outpatient department (OPD) services and other treatments. Assurances have been given regarding the adherence to this timeline.
Discussions concerning the establishment of a law university are also ongoing, with the government nearing the completion of the necessary administrative procedures. While the exact location is still under deliberation, the departmental file is reportedly almost finalized, awaiting further approvals. Additionally, steps are being taken to facilitate the establishment of one or two private universities in Jammu and Kashmir, following the recent completion and release of regulatory rules after the act was passed during the Budget Session.
