The world motorsport governing body, FIA, has recognized the burgeoning talent of Indian racer Atiqa Mir, stating that rising stars like the 11-year-old are instrumental in reshaping the future of the sport.
Information was available with The Chenab Times that Atiqa Mir, notably the first Indian to receive backing from the F1 Academy, is currently competing vigorously against more experienced drivers in the 12-14 age category across European karting series. Her long-term aspiration is to compete in Formula 1, a domain where no female driver has participated since 1992.
“Rising stars such as Atiqa Mir are redefining the future of motor sport and her recent success shows how bright the future is for our sport,” the FIA, the apex body for four-wheel motorsports globally, announced on social media on Thursday.
The FIA further elaborated on Atiqa’s trajectory, stating, “With incredible support from her FIA Member Club, the Western India Automobile Association, Atiqa has already represented her country at the MENA Karting Championship Nations Cup and has now started competing in international FIA Karting competitions on her journey to professional racing. Well done Atiqa and we look forward to following your continued success.”
Earlier in May, Mir achieved a significant milestone by securing a clean sweep in Round 2 of the Champions of the Future Academy held in Greece. Subsequently, this month, she became the youngest Indian to achieve two top-10 finishes in a round of the FIA European Championship, which took place in Sweden.
Last month, Atiqa garnered considerable attention when she outperformed Mercedes junior driver Niccolo Perico to secure pole position in Round 3 of the Champions of the Future Academy series in Italy. This remarkable performance did not go unnoticed by the FIA.
In a separate communication, the FIA highlighted, “At the recent Champions of the Future Academy Program event in Italy, 11-year-old Atiqa Mir from India delivered a standout performance, securing pole position and setting an event record against a highly competitive international field.”
The governing body emphasized the broader implications of such achievements. “Her achievement reflects the opportunities that accessible competition can create for young drivers as they develop their skills and gain experience on the international stage.”
The FIA reiterated its commitment to fostering talent within the sport, stating, “Through initiatives that broaden access to motorsport and strengthen talent pathways, the FIA is committed to helping more young people discover, and succeed in our sport.” The statements underscore a global effort to nurture new talent and broaden the appeal and accessibility of professional motorsport.
