Lucknow, Uttar Pradesh – Bahujan Samaj Party (BSP) chief Mayawati has demanded that Samajwadi Party (SP) president Akhilesh Yadav issue an apology to the entire Jat community for his recent remarks targeting the Rashtriya Lok Dal (RLD) and its leader, Union Minister Jayant Chaudhary. Mayawati described Yadav’s comment, which alluded to the RLD being turned from a “chavanni” (25 paise) into a rupee, as “improper, indecent, and highly shameful.” She stated that such rhetoric constitutes an insult not only to Jayant Chaudhary, the grandson of former Prime Minister Chaudhary Charan Singh, but also to the entire Jat community.
Political Firestorm Erupts Over ‘Chavanni’ Remark
The controversy ignited after Akhilesh Yadav, in a public statement, alluded to his former allies stating that the SP had “turned them from ‘chavanni’ into a rupee,” suggesting his party had enhanced their political standing. This remark was widely interpreted as a veiled reference to Jayant Chaudhary, who had himself used the term “chavanni” in early 2022 during the Uttar Pradesh assembly elections, asserting he was not someone who could be easily “flipped.” The RLD subsequently joined the BJP-led National Democratic Alliance (NDA) in March 2024, with Chaudhary becoming a Union minister.
Jayant Chaudhary responded to Yadav’s statement, warning that “such arrogance only leads to downfall” and that if Yadav intended to use disparaging language, he should have directly named him. Chaudhary also criticized the reference to teaching the Jat community “ABCD,” deeming it a sign of arrogance that would prove detrimental.
Mayawati’s Critique of SP’s Politics
In a series of posts on the social media platform X, Mayawati accused the SP of engaging in “caste-driven, narrow-minded politics.” She alleged that the party’s approach had harmed not only rival parties but also its former allies, and that its political strategies often benefited the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) electorally while weakening secular forces.
Recalling past alliances, Mayawati cited the 1993 SP-BSP alliance, which she claimed collapsed due to the SP’s “arrogant” attitude, leading to the 1995 Lucknow state guest house incident. She also referenced the 2019 SP-BSP alliance, asserting it ended because of Yadav’s “arrogant and self-serving attitude” after it failed to yield the expected electoral results.
Mayawati further alleged that previous SP governments had failed to take effective steps for Dalits, backward classes, minorities, and upper-caste communities, instead benefiting “goons, criminals, mafias and other anarchic elements.” She urged voters to be cautious of the SP’s “narrow and casteist politics” and to prevent the party from returning to power in the upcoming Assembly elections.
Historical Context of Chaudhary Charan Singh and Jat Influence
Chaudhary Charan Singh, a prominent peasant leader and former Prime Minister of India, hailed from a Jat family in Uttar Pradesh. He was a significant figure in Indian politics, advocating for farmers and rural development. His legacy continues to hold considerable influence, particularly within the Jat community, which is a politically influential group in western Uttar Pradesh. The RLD, founded by his son Ajit Singh and now led by his grandson Jayant Chaudhary, often draws support from this community.
The exchange between Yadav and Chaudhary, amplified by Mayawati’s intervention, has revived the political significance of the “chavanni” remark ahead of the upcoming Uttar Pradesh Assembly elections.
