Mohammad Syed Akhoon Criticizes National Conference Leadership

SRINAGAR: Mohammad Syed Akhoon, a senior politician and former two-time MLA from Hazratbal, has publicly voiced strong criticism against the leadership of the National Conference (NC), accusing the party of promoting dynastic politics and sidelining established leaders. Akhoon, who was later suspended from the party for six years for alleged anti-party activities, stated that the current NC does not resemble its past ethos and is primarily driven by a desire for power.

In a series of statements, Akhoon expressed his deep-seated dissatisfaction with the party’s internal dynamics, citing instances where he believes familial ties have been prioritized over merit and experience. He pointed to the allocation of tickets for elections, suggesting a pattern of favoritism towards the relatives of senior party figures. Akhoon specifically mentioned cases involving Mian Altaf, Ali Mohammad Sagar, and Akbar Lone, whose family members reportedly received party nominations for electoral contests, allegedly without adequate consultation with senior party members like himself.

Akhoon also alleged that decisions within the NC are no longer made inclusively, and that senior leaders are being overlooked. He recounted an instance where he was reportedly assured by NC President Dr. Farooq Abdullah that a particular candidate would not contest from Hazratbal, only for the situation to unfold differently. This lack of consultation and perceived disregard for his input, Akhoon stated, contributed to his growing disillusionment with the party’s direction.

These criticisms emerged prominently in September 2024, leading to his eventual suspension from the NC’s basic membership in November 2024 by party president Dr. Farooq Abdullah. The suspension, for a period of six years, was attributed to anti-party activities.

Mohammad Syed Akhoon has a long political history, having served as an MLA for the Hazratbal constituency in 1996 and 2002. He was known for his loyalty, even during challenging periods for the National Conference in the 1990s, when he reportedly kept the party’s flag flying when many other leaders were in hiding or had left the valley. Despite this history, he felt marginalized in recent years, with new entrants allegedly being given preference over him.

In a significant political shift, Mohammad Syed Akhoon joined the Jammu and Kashmir Apni Party on July 30, 2026. He was welcomed into the party by its President, Mohammad Altaf Bukhari, who highlighted Akhoon’s selfless service and vast political experience as valuable assets. Akhoon expressed his confidence in the Apni Party’s leadership and stated his objective of serving the public interest, promoting peace, ensuring development, and providing better governance.
