Jammu and Kashmir Waqf Board Clarifies Stance on Food Distribution at Khankahs

Srinagar, Jammu and Kashmir: Dr. Syed Darakhshan Andrabi, Chairperson of the Jammu and Kashmir Waqf Board, has clarified her recent remarks regarding food distribution within the premises of Khankahs, asserting that her objective was to promote organised and respectful practices rather than impose a ban.

The Chenab Times has learned that Andrabi stated her comments were misrepresented and that her intention was to raise awareness about maintaining the sanctity of these revered sites. She emphasized that traditional food items, such as Tehri, which are an integral part of the local culture, can continue to be distributed at Khankahs.

Dr. Andrabi explained that the board has invested considerable effort in renovating and beautifying these Khankahs, and it is therefore incumbent upon everyone to ensure that the premises are not marred by litter or haphazard food distribution. She highlighted the construction of dedicated sheds for Tehri distribution, urging the public to utilise these facilities to maintain order and cleanliness.

“All I wanted to say was that we have constructed Tehri sheds, where people should distribute it,” Andrabi stated, addressing the misinterpretation of her earlier comments. She reiterated that bringing and distributing Tehri is a cultural practice that should be preserved but conducted in a manner that upholds the dignity of the religious spaces.

The Chairperson further elaborated that spilling food in the Khankah premises is considered an act of disrespect. She noted that untidy food distribution can lead to littering, which compromises the cleanliness and sanctity of these holy places and will not be tolerated. The board’s initiative to enhance the aesthetic appeal of the Khankahs is aimed at providing a more conducive environment for devotees and visitors alike.

The J&K Waqf Board oversees the management and administration of numerous religious and charitable endowments across the Union Territory. Its mandate includes the upkeep and preservation of mosques, shrines, and other Waqf properties, ensuring their proper functioning and maintaining their spiritual and architectural integrity. The board also plays a role in managing associated charitable activities and community services.

The clarification comes amidst discussions surrounding religious practices and the management of sacred sites. The Waqf Board aims to balance the continuation of cultural traditions with the imperative of maintaining the sanctity and cleanliness of religious infrastructure. This approach seeks to foster a sense of shared responsibility among the public towards preserving these important heritage sites.
