Villupuram, Tamil Nadu – September 16, 2026 – District Collector Sheik Abdul Rahman convened a crucial meeting on Saturday to meticulously review and bolster the preparedness measures for the impending northeast monsoon season. The review, held at the district rural development agency office, underscored the administration’s commitment to mitigating potential risks associated with heavy rainfall forecasts.
Proactive Measures and Inter-Departmental Coordination
In light of the Indian Meteorological Department’s projections of significant rainfall, Collector Rahman emphasized the necessity of a proactive approach. Officials have been strategically deployed across all regions of Villupuram district to implement precautionary measures and address potential vulnerabilities. The Collector directed key agencies, including the police department, fire and rescue services, the National Disaster Response Force (NDRF), and the State Disaster Response Force (SDRF), to maintain a heightened state of alert for swift and effective rescue and relief operations. Municipal, panchayat, and rural administration officials have also been instructed to remain on standby, ensuring a coordinated response mechanism.
Information was available with The Chenab Times that relief camps are being established and equipped with essential supplies to accommodate residents from low-lying and flood-prone areas. Special attention is being given to coastal areas such as Marakkanam, Vanur, and Kottakuppam, where fisherfolk have been advised to secure their boats and nets. Arrangements are also in place for the relocation of families to safer locations if the need arises.
Water Resources and Power Management
The Water Resources Department will maintain continuous monitoring of reservoir and lake water levels, providing crucial updates to the administration. Furthermore, the Tamil Nadu Electricity Board has been tasked with deploying staff in shifts and ensuring essential equipment is readily available to facilitate a rapid restoration of power supply in the event of disruptions. This measure is critical for maintaining essential services and ensuring public safety during heavy downpours.
The Hindu reported on October 18, 2025, that the Collector had previously instructed line departments to identify and map vulnerable areas, create databases of first responders, and audit their preparedness. This included assessing the readiness of equipment such as earthmovers, inflatable and motorboats, tree cutters, fire extinguishers, diesel generators, and sandbags. Schools designated as potential relief camps were also to be inspected for structural integrity and the availability of adequate drinking water and sanitation facilities.

The preparedness extended to ensuring government hospitals and primary health centers are stocked with adequate medicines, and the Cooperative Department is to guarantee the availability of essential commodities at fair price shops. Senior IAS officers have been deployed to oversee relief and emergency operations in Greater Chennai Corporation zones, with ministerial teams conducting regular field inspections in flood-prone areas. A joint framework involving various government bodies, including the Greater Chennai Corporation, Chennai Metropolitan Water Supply and Sewerage Board, police, fire services, and the electricity department, has been established to enhance preparedness and flood mitigation measures.
