An individual arrested in connection with the shooting of an Assistant Sub-Inspector (ASI) of the Amritsar Commissionerate Police has escaped from police custody. The escape occurred on Wednesday night while the accused was being transported to the Majitha area for the recovery of a weapon allegedly used in the crime.
Information was available with The Chenab Times that the accused, identified as Karan, a resident of Jhanjhoti village, managed to evade law enforcement personnel during transit. In response to the security breach, the Senior Superintendent of Police (SSP) Kanwalpreet Singh Chahal has reportedly suspended Inspector Gurpreet Singh, the SHO of Rajasansi police station, citing alleged negligence in handling the case. Official sources have remained reticent on providing further details regarding the escape.
The incident for which Karan was arrested took place on the night of September 11. ASI Jaswant Singh, who was serving with the Amritsar Commissionerate Police Lines, was travelling on a motorcycle in the Rajasansi area. According to initial reports, two individuals on a motorcycle pursued him and opened fire. The bullet reportedly struck his turban and grazed his head, causing a minor injury.
At the outset, the authenticity of the incident was questioned by police officials. However, following the apprehension of Karan, the subsequent police investigation indicated his involvement in the shooting. Authorities were operating under the premise that the attack was linked to an existing personal enmity.
Adding a layer of complexity, a poster purportedly issued by the Tehreek-e-Taliban Hindustan (TTH) regarding the incident surfaced online. However, this poster reportedly contained an incorrect photograph, raising questions about its veracity and origin.
Karan’s arrest was facilitated by CCTV footage, and subsequently, a court granted the police a five-day remand for further interrogation. Investigators were also actively conducting raids to apprehend his alleged accomplices, who are believed to be involved in the crime.
The escape of an accused involved in a case pertaining to the shooting of a police officer raises significant concerns regarding the security protocols in place for handling high-profile detainees. Authorities are now reportedly engaged in a concerted effort to recapture Karan and to investigate the circumstances that facilitated his escape. This development places further pressure on the police department to ensure the safety and security of personnel and the public while bringing perpetrators of crime to justice.
