The Bhotekoshi-Trishuli floods resulted in a significant loss of life and widespread displacement. The NDRRMA has confirmed a grim toll, with at least 1,455 lives lost, 5,285 individuals reported missing, and 13,795 people successfully rescued. The government has directed all relevant agencies to prioritize and expedite rehabilitation and reconstruction efforts in the areas most impacted by the disaster.

According to official statements, the decision to cease search operations was based on comprehensive recommendations from various bodies, including the District Security Committee, the District Disaster Management Committees, and the Executive Committee of the NDRRMA. The flash floods, triggered by heavy monsoon rains, caused widespread damage to infrastructure, homes, and agricultural land in the mountainous Rasuwa district. The disaster highlighted the vulnerability of communities in flood-prone areas and the need for robust disaster preparedness and response mechanisms. The ongoing rehabilitation and reconstruction efforts are expected to be a long-term undertaking, requiring substantial resources and coordinated planning.

Reconstruction will involve rebuilding damaged homes, essential public facilities such as schools and health centers, and critical infrastructure like bridges and roads that were washed away or severely damaged. The government is expected to work closely with local communities and international aid agencies to ensure that the rebuilding process is efficient and sustainable, aiming to restore livelihoods and normalcy for the affected population.

The transition from rescue to rehabilitation marks a critical juncture in the disaster management cycle. While the immediate emergency response phase has concluded, the long-term challenges of rebuilding lives and communities are just beginning. The government has pledged its commitment to supporting the affected families throughout this arduous process, focusing on both immediate relief and the eventual restoration of the region’s socio-economic fabric.

The NDRRMA’s confirmation of the final figures for deaths, missing persons, and rescued individuals underscores the severity of the calamity. The focus now is on ensuring that aid and resources are effectively channeled towards rebuilding efforts, with transparency and accountability being paramount to regain public trust and ensure a successful recovery.

The government’s proactive shift in strategy aims to prevent prolonged humanitarian crises by promptly addressing the needs of the displaced and ensuring that reconstruction projects commence without undue delay. The scale of the devastation necessitates a concerted national effort, with an emphasis on resilience and preparedness for future natural disasters.
