HAMIRPUR: Himachal Pradesh police have apprehended two individuals in the Hamirpur district, seizing 1.028 kilograms of charas. The arrests were made by a team from the Sadar police station at the Hathli Khud bridge.
Information was available with The Chenab Times that the arrested men have been identified as Lekh Raj, a resident of Saroha village in Chachyot tehsil, and Saurabh Jamwal, who hails from Sadiyana village in Sadar tehsil of Mandi district. Both are alleged to be involved in drug peddling activities.
Superintendent of Police Balbir Thakur confirmed the details of the operation. A case has been registered against the accused under relevant sections of the Narcotic Drugs and Psychotropic Substances (NDPS) Act, specifically Sections 20 and 29, at the Sadar police station. These sections pertain to offences relating to the possession, sale, and illegal cultivation of narcotic drugs and psychotropic substances.
An extensive investigation has been initiated by the police to uncover the entire network associated with this seizure. The inquiry aims to trace the origin of the contraband, identifying the suppliers and intended recipients or buyers. Authorities are seeking to dismantle the drug trafficking chain operating within the region.
The police department has reiterated its commitment to combating the drug menace and has appealed to the public for cooperation. Citizens with any information regarding drug-related activities are encouraged to come forward and share it with the police. Assurances of strict confidentiality have been provided to informants to protect their identities. This proactive approach aims to enhance community involvement in maintaining law and order and preventing drug-related crimes.
The seizure highlights the ongoing efforts by law enforcement agencies in Himachal Pradesh to curb the supply and consumption of illicit substances. The state, known for its tourism and natural beauty, has been facing challenges related to drug trafficking. Police patrols and surveillance operations have been intensified across various districts, particularly in areas identified as potential transit or distribution points for narcotics.
The NDPS Act is a stringent law in India designed to control and regulate the production, possession, sale, purchase, transport, and consumption of drugs and psychotropic substances. Violations can lead to severe penalties, including lengthy prison sentences and hefty fines. The current case is expected to proceed through the legal channels, with the police building a comprehensive case against the arrested individuals.
The focus of the investigation will be on gathering evidence to establish the charges against Lekh Raj and Saurabh Jamwal. This includes forensic analysis of the seized charas and corroborating witness testimonies, if any. The authorities are also looking into the financial aspects of the alleged drug trade to identify any potential money laundering activities.
The SP’s appeal for public information underscores the importance of community partnership in tackling crime. By fostering an environment where citizens feel empowered to report suspicious activities without fear of reprisal, the police aim to create a more secure and drug-free society. The Hamirpur district, like many others in the state, has been a focal point for such enforcement actions.
This incident serves as a reminder of the persistent threat posed by drug trafficking to public health and safety. Law enforcement agencies continue to remain vigilant, employing various strategies to intercept illegal consignments and apprehend those involved. The successful seizure in Hamirpur is a testament to the dedication of the police force in their ongoing battle against the drug trade.
