Former Prime Minister Manmohan Singh Passes Away at 92

NEW DELHI, Dec 26 – Earlier confusion surrounding the health of former Prime Minister Dr. Manmohan Singh, fueled by a now-deleted social media post by Robert Vadra, has been clarified with the official announcement of Singh’s passing on December 26, 2024. Vadra, who is related to the Congress party through his marriage to Priyanka Gandhi, had prematurely announced Singh’s death on the social media platform X, leading to widespread speculation and premature obituaries.

The erroneous announcement was quickly retracted by Vadra, but not before it had caused significant confusion among the public and media. Several news agencies, including this one, had to issue corrections and await official statements regarding Singh’s health status.

Dr. Manmohan Singh, aged 92, was admitted to the emergency department of AIIMS Delhi in the evening due to a sudden deterioration in his health. Despite efforts by the medical team, Singh passed away at 9:51 PM, as confirmed by the hospital’s press release.

This incident highlights the challenges of information accuracy in the age of social media, where unverified reports can spread rapidly, affecting public perception and causing distress. The premature report by Vadra, though retracted, underscores the need for careful dissemination of sensitive information, especially concerning public figures.

The official confirmation of Singh’s death came from AIIMS, detailing that he had been under treatment for age-related ailments and had lost consciousness at his residence before being rushed to the hospital. Singh’s contributions to India’s economic liberalization during his tenure as Finance Minister and later as Prime Minister are being remembered as part of his legacy, marking a significant period in India’s economic history.

As the nation mourns, the government is expected to announce details of state ceremonies to honor Singh’s life and contributions. Meanwhile, this event serves as a reminder of the importance of verified information in public communications.
