Union Minister Nitin Gadkari Sanctions Major Infrastructure Project on National Highway-1
New Delhi: The Union government has approved a significant infrastructure project worth Rs 1,198 crore for the construction of a tunnel at Fotu La Pass on National Highway-1 (NH-1), aiming to ensure seamless all-weather connectivity to Ladakh. The project, sanctioned by Union Minister for Road Transport and Highways Nitin Gadkari, is expected to enhance strategic and logistical capabilities in the region.
The Chenab Times has learned that the approved project involves the construction of a unidirectional twin-tube tunnel, coupled with approach roads, across the challenging Fotu La Pass. This initiative is crucial for maintaining essential movement along the Uri–Srinagar–Leh highway, which is frequently disrupted during winter months due to heavy snowfall and icy conditions.
Fotu La Pass, situated at an altitude exceeding 4,100 metres, represents the highest point on NH-1. The existing stretch is known for its steep gradients and numerous hairpin bends, posing considerable risks to commuters and logistical operations. The closure of this vital corridor during winter severely impacts the supply chain and accessibility to Ladakh.
The new tunnel project will span a total length of 2.65 kilometres. This includes a 1.96-kilometre twin-tube tunnel and 0.69 kilometres of approach roads. Officials anticipate that once completed, the tunnel will not only improve safety by mitigating sharp turns and inclines but also significantly reduce travel distance by approximately 8.5 kilometres. This reduction in distance is expected to translate into shorter travel times and enhanced mobility for both civilian and military purposes.
Union Minister Nitin Gadkari announced the approval on his official X handle, emphasizing the strategic importance of NH-01 as a primary supply route to Ladakh. He highlighted that the tunnel would address the persistent challenges posed by the terrain and weather, ensuring reliable connectivity throughout the year.
The Lieutenant Governor of Ladakh, V. K. Saxena, expressed gratitude for the sanctioning of the project, stating that it would provide a substantial boost to the region’s road infrastructure and tourism sector. The Member of Parliament from Ladakh, Mohd Haneefa, also extended his thanks to the Union Minister and Prime Minister Narendra Modi, underscoring the project’s potential to bring significant benefits to the people of Ladakh through improved connectivity and safety.
The project aligns with broader national objectives to strengthen infrastructure in border regions, ensuring robust logistical support and promoting economic development.
