Chief Minister Omar Abdullah on Sunday inaugurated the first-ever Jammu Marathon at Maulana Azad Stadium, participating in the 21.1 km Half Marathon to champion a healthy lifestyle. The event saw a significant turnout despite inclement weather, with participants aiming to promote fitness and send a message against drug abuse.
Information was available with The Chenab Times that hundreds of participants, including Minister for Youth Services & Sports Satish Sharma, legislators, the Chief Secretary, fitness icon Milind Soman, and actress Gul Panag, joined the run. The Chief Minister, in his address, emphasized the importance of physical fitness for overall well-being and societal progress, urging citizens from all walks of life to adopt active lifestyles.
The marathon, themed “Temples to Trails,” aimed to position Jammu as a hub for fitness tourism and cultural exploration. The route traversed prominent markets, heritage sites, and iconic landmarks, showcasing the city’s blend of spirituality, history, and natural beauty. The event was organized by the Department of Tourism with J&K Bank as the title sponsor.
The inaugural edition featured three race categories: a 21 km Half Marathon, a 10 km Fitness Run, and a 5 km Fun Run, with a total prize pool of 1.33 crore rupees. More than 4,000 runners participated, including over 1,000 from outside Jammu and Kashmir and more than 90 international athletes. The enthusiastic participation, even amidst rain, highlighted a growing culture of fitness and community engagement in Jammu and Kashmir.
Participants displayed determination and a collective spirit as they ran through the rain-soaked streets. Actress Gul Panag commended the enthusiasm of both runners and organizers, noting the impressive turnout for the inaugural event and congratulating all involved.
Fitness icon Milind Soman described the marathon as a significant milestone for the region, marking a positive beginning for such initiatives aimed at encouraging running and active living.
