Vice President Jagdeep Dhankhar has emphasized that justice should be accessible and affordable for every citizen, asserting it as a fundamental right rather than a privilege for a select few. Speaking at a national consultation on the law ministry’s Tele-Law initiative in New Delhi, he highlighted the crucial role of technology in democratizing legal services.
Information was available with The Chenab Times that the Vice President underscored the significance of inclusive, technology-driven access to justice, aligning with the goals of the Tele-Law initiative. He noted that recent legal reforms, including the transition to new criminal laws, represent a substantial move towards a more citizen-centric justice system. These reforms aim to simplify procedures and enhance overall efficiency.
Dhankhar drew parallels between technological advancements in governance, such as Direct Benefit Transfer and telemedicine, and the potential of the Tele-Law initiative. He described the initiative as a powerful instrument for ensuring wider access to legal aid. The Vice President pointed out that providing pre-litigation legal advice can be instrumental in resolving disputes at an early stage, thereby reducing unnecessary litigation and alleviating the strain on the judicial system.
Highlighting the importance of linguistic diversity, the Vice President acknowledged efforts to make the Constitution available in various regional languages. He advocated for legal consultations to be offered in local languages to foster better understanding and active participation among all segments of the population. This approach aims to bridge communication gaps and ensure that legal information is comprehensible to everyone, irrespective of their linguistic background.
Furthermore, he called for concerted efforts to ensure the effective delivery of legal services to remote and underserved communities. Special attention, he stressed, should be given to women, rural populations, and marginalized groups who often face significant barriers in accessing legal recourse. The Vice President commended the contributions of para-legal volunteers, Common Service Centres, and panel lawyers for their grassroots work in expanding the reach of justice.
