Srinagar, August 14: A Special Anti-Corruption Court in Srinagar has convicted a former Executive Engineer of the Rural Engineering Wing (REW) in Ganderbal and an orderly in a bribery trap case. Both individuals have been sentenced to four years of simple imprisonment and a fine of Rs 10,000 each.
The Chenab Times has learned that the Special Judge Anti-Corruption, Srinagar, delivered the verdict against Ghulam Nabi Dar, the former Executive Engineer of REW Ganderbal, and Mohd. Shameem Parra, who served as an orderly. The case stems from a trap laid by the Vigilance Organisation Kashmir, now known as the Anti-Corruption Bureau (ACB), Srinagar.
The case, registered under FIR No. 02/2014 at Police Station VOK (now ACB), pertains to the demand and acceptance of illegal gratification during the processing of a contractor’s bill. The court found both accused guilty of criminal misconduct, accepting illegal gratification, and criminal conspiracy. They were convicted under relevant provisions of the Jammu and Kashmir Prevention of Corruption Act, including Section 5(2) read with Section 5(1)(d), and Section 4-A. Additionally, they were found guilty of criminal conspiracy under Section 120-B of the Ranbir Penal Code.
The court mandated that the sentences for simple imprisonment and the fine are to run concurrently. The prosecution was handled by ACB Special Public Prosecutor Wajahat Jamil (CPO), and the judgment was pronounced by Special Judge Anti-Corruption, Srinagar, Tasleem Arief, on August 14, 2026.
This conviction follows an investigation initiated after a contractor reported the demand for a bribe. The ACB had been actively working to curb corruption within government departments. The case highlights the continued efforts by anti-corruption bodies in the Union Territory to ensure accountability among public servants.
The Rural Engineering Wing is responsible for implementing various rural development projects, making the integrity of its officials crucial for the effective delivery of services and infrastructure. The conviction serves as a deterrent against corrupt practices and reinforces the importance of transparency and ethical conduct in public service.
