Jammu and Kashmir: Farooq Abdullah Pleads Not Guilty in JKCA Corruption Case

Srinagar, Jammu and Kashmir – Dr Farooq Abdullah, president of the National Conference and former Chief Minister of Jammu and Kashmir, formally pleaded not guilty to charges of alleged fund misappropriation in the Jammu and Kashmir Cricket Association (JKCA) scam. The plea was entered before the court of Chief Judicial Magistrate Srinagar.

Abdullah Enters Plea of Not Guilty

Appearing virtually before the court, Dr Abdullah was presented with the chargesheet filed by the Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI). When formally asked by the presiding officer, Dr Abdullah stated, “No, I am not guilty of any of the charges.” Responding to a further query on whether he had anything more to say, he added, “I have nothing more to say except that these charges are fabricated.” The court is now expected to proceed with the case as per established legal procedures.

Information was available with The Chenab Times that the court had previously, on March 2, determined that a case had been made out against Dr Abdullah and five other individuals in connection with the multi-crore JKCA scam. At that time, the court had indicated that charges were to be framed against them for offences under various sections of the Ranbir Penal Code (RPC), which are applicable in Jammu and Kashmir. These sections include 120-B (Criminal conspiracy), 406 (Criminal breach of trust), and 409 (Criminal breach of trust by a public servant).

Background of the JKCA Case

The previous court order highlighted that the essential ingredients of these offences were prima facie established against Dr Abdullah, who formerly served as the JKCA president. Also named as accused in the sprawling case are Mohammad Saleem Khan, the then General Secretary of JKCA; Ahsan Mirza, the then treasurer of JKCA; Manzoor Gazanfar Ali; Bashir Ahmad Misgar, a former Jammu and Kashmir Bank executive; and Gulzar Ahmad Beigh. The allegations revolve around the alleged misappropriation of funds belonging to the cricket association over a period of time.

The CBI had initiated an investigation into the financial irregularities within the JKCA, leading to the filing of chargesheets against the prominent political figure and others associated with the sports body. The case has seen multiple hearings and legal proceedings as the court examines the evidence presented by the prosecution. The plea of not guilty entered by Dr Abdullah signifies the commencement of the trial phase, where the prosecution will be required to prove its case beyond a reasonable doubt.

The JKCA scam has been a subject of intense scrutiny, involving allegations of financial impropriety and mismanagement of funds intended for the promotion of cricket in the region. The legal proceedings are being closely watched, given the stature of the individuals involved and the historical significance of cricket in Jammu and Kashmir. The court’s decision to frame charges followed a thorough review of the investigation’s findings, establishing a legal basis for the trial to proceed.
