SRINAGAR: Scores of employees working under the National Health Mission (NHM) across Jammu and Kashmir launched a 48-hour sit-in protest on Wednesday in Srinagar, amplifying their long-standing demands for improved service conditions and benefits.
The Chenab Times has learned that the protestors are demanding an immediate revision of their pay scales to align with those in other states, the implementation of a secure job policy, and the inclusion of social security benefits. These benefits include Employees’ Provident Fund (EPF), Employees’ State Insurance (ESI), insurance coverage, and post-retirement support.
The employees stated that despite repeated assurances from the administration, no substantial progress has been made in addressing their grievances. This lack of action has compelled them to resort to a public demonstration.
NHM staff highlighted their crucial role in healthcare delivery, particularly during emergency situations, while continuing to face significant uncertainty regarding their wages and job security. They emphasized that their contributions often go unrecognized in terms of equitable compensation and stable employment.
The protesting employees have issued a stern warning that a failure to address their concerns promptly may lead to further escalation of their demonstrations in the coming days. The current sit-in protest is scheduled to continue for a total of 48 hours, marking a significant period of industrial action within the region’s healthcare sector.
The association had previously announced the plan for the 48-hour sit-in to commence from Wednesday, aiming to garner attention and pressure the authorities to act on their pending demands that have been a point of contention for an extended period.
