Mumbai Metro Lines 9 and 2B Commence Partial Operations Amidst Inauguration Delays

Mumbai’s public transport network is set to expand with the partial commencement of operations on Metro Lines 9 and 2B. The inauguration, initially planned for April 3, 2026, has been rescheduled to April 7, 2026, due to the unavailability of senior political leaders engaged in election campaigns in other states. The revised schedule aims to ensure the presence of key dignitaries for the launch ceremonies.

Metro Line 9: Enhancing Northern Connectivity

The first phase of Metro Line 9 will operate on a 4.5-kilometer stretch between Dahisar East and Mira Road, encompassing four stations: Dahisar, Pandurang Wadi, Mira Gaon, and Kashigaon. This section is a critical extension of Metro Line 7, aiming to improve connectivity for commuters in the Mira-Bhayandar region. Trial runs have been successfully completed, and the Commissioner of Metro Rail Safety has granted the necessary approvals, paving the way for its public launch. Once operational, this segment is expected to significantly ease traffic congestion on the Dahisar toll naka stretch of the Western Express Highway and provide a much-needed alternative to crowded road routes.

Metro Line 2B: Bridging Eastern and Western Suburbs

Concurrently, the first phase of Metro Line 2B will begin partial operations, connecting DN Nagar in western Mumbai to Mandale (Mankhurd). This segment covers five stations: Mandale, Mankhurd, BSNL Metro, Shivaji Chowk, and Diamond Garden. This route is designed to enhance east-west connectivity by linking important areas such as Andheri West, Bandra-Kurla Complex (BKC), Kurla, and Chembur with the eastern suburbs. The Mumbai Metropolitan Region Development Authority (MMRDA) has confirmed that final safety checks and trial runs have been concluded for both lines. The full 23.6-kilometer corridor of Line 2B, when completed, will feature 20 stations, further integrating Mumbai’s transport infrastructure.

Broader Infrastructure Development

The inauguration of these metro lines coincides with other significant infrastructure developments. The ground-breaking ceremony for the Bandra-Kurla Complex (BKC) Pod Taxi project is also scheduled to take place. Additionally, the Tunnel Boring Machine (TBM) Nayak will be launched for the Thane-Borivali Twin Tunnel project on the same day. These projects collectively aim to modernize Mumbai’s transportation network, reduce travel times, and alleviate traffic congestion across the metropolitan region.

Project Background and Future Outlook

The Mumbai Metro project has been progressing in phases, with several lines already operational. Metro Lines 2A and 7 became operational in April 2022, and Line 3, the city’s first underground metro, has been opening in stages since October 2024. The expansion projects, including Lines 9 and 2B, are crucial for the MMRDA’s long-term vision of creating a comprehensive and efficient metro network. Officials anticipate that the new lines will lead to a substantial increase in daily ridership, potentially adding between 50,000 to one lakh passengers. Projections indicate that a significant portion of Mumbai’s planned metro network could be completed and operational by 2027, with further expansions planned for Navi Mumbai and surrounding satellite cities in the subsequent years.
