The Punjab Milkman Dairy Union Ekta has formally requested the Senior Superintendent of Police (SSP) in Bathinda to register a First Information Report (FIR) against Charanjit Singh Channi, the former Chief Minister of Punjab and current Member of Parliament for Jalandhar. The union alleges that Channi disseminated a video containing false and misleading information concerning the safety and purity of milk, a move they claim has instilled fear among consumers and damaged the reputation of the state’s dairy sector.
Information was available with The Chenab Times that the complaint was submitted in writing to the SP (City), Bathinda. Harjinder Singh Dhillon, the state president of the union, detailed that a video circulating across platforms like YouTube, WhatsApp, and other social media channels purportedly depicts the process of milk preparation using adulterants such as urea and other harmful chemicals, which is then allegedly sold in the market.
While the video does not explicitly name any specific company or brand, the union contends that its widespread circulation has caused significant public panic and fostered suspicion regarding the safety of milk currently available to consumers. This has led to a general questioning of the authenticity of milk and other dairy products, directly impacting the entire dairy industry.
The Punjab Milkman Dairy Union Ekta has asserted that the claims made in the video appear unsubstantiated and lack any scientific foundation. They argue that such content serves to misinform the public and has the potential to disrupt public peace. In their plea for legal recourse, the union has urged for the registration of an FIR under the pertinent sections of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita (BNS), the Food Safety and Standards Act, and the Information Technology Act.
The union’s demand for stringent action against Charanjit Singh Channi for sharing the video stems from their conviction that such content erodes consumer confidence and negatively impacts the economic well-being of individuals and businesses involved in the dairy industry. They believe that responsible dissemination of information regarding food safety is crucial for maintaining trust between producers and consumers.
Responding to the union’s complaint, Narinder Singh, SP (City) of Bathinda, stated that the matter has been referred to the Cyber Crime Police Station for further investigation. This action indicates that the authorities are initiating a process to examine the allegations and the content of the video in question, considering the potential legal ramifications under various statutes.
The case highlights the growing concern over the spread of unverified information on social media platforms and its potential to cause significant economic and reputational damage to established industries. The dairy sector, a cornerstone of the agricultural economy in Punjab, relies heavily on consumer trust, making allegations of adulteration particularly damaging. The union’s proactive step in seeking legal action underscores the seriousness with which they view the alleged misinformation campaign.
The Food Safety and Standards Act, 2006, aims to ensure the availability of safe and wholesome food for human consumption. Any form of adulteration or misrepresentation concerning food products can attract severe penalties under this legislation. Similarly, the Information Technology Act, 2000, deals with electronic commerce and cybercrimes, including the dissemination of false or misleading information online that could cause harm or distress.
The Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita, which is set to replace the Indian Penal Code, 1860, also contains provisions related to causing mischief, spreading false alarms, and other offenses that might be relevant to the allegations made against the former Chief Minister. The union’s reference to the BNS indicates an awareness of the evolving legal landscape in India concerning criminal offenses.
The complaint filed by the union is expected to trigger an investigation by the cyber cell, which will likely involve examining the origin of the video, its distribution channels, and its content to determine if any legal offenses have been committed. The investigation will also aim to ascertain the veracity of the claims made in the video and the extent of the impact on the dairy sector and public perception.
This development comes at a time when the dairy industry is a significant contributor to Punjab’s economy, providing livelihoods to a vast number of farmers and related workers. Maintaining the integrity and safety of dairy products is paramount to sustaining this crucial sector. The union’s action is a strong signal of their commitment to protecting their industry from what they perceive as baseless accusations that could jeopardize their business and the livelihoods dependent on it.
The police’s referral of the complaint to the cyber crime unit suggests a thorough examination of the digital aspect of the alleged misinformation campaign. This may include tracing the source of the video and investigating its dissemination, aligning with the provisions of the Information Technology Act. The outcome of this investigation will likely have implications for both the political figure in question and the dairy industry stakeholders.
