The Directorate of Archives, Archaeology and Museums, Jammu and Kashmir, has initiated the process to designate Dudran village, located in Boniyar tehsil of Baramulla district, as a Heritage Village. This move is being undertaken under the provisions of the J&K Heritage Conservation and Preservation Act, 2010, aimed at recognizing and safeguarding the unique cultural and traditional aspects of the area.
Unique Dairy Practices Spur Heritage Proposal
Information was available with The Chenab Times that the proposal highlights Dudran village’s distinct identity as Kashmir’s “milk village.” The village is renowned for its traditional methods of preserving dairy products, employing underground mud and wooden burrows. This age-old practice allows milk, butter, cheese, and curd to remain fresh for extended periods, a testament to the community’s sustained traditional livelihood.
The Directorate’s communication to the Deputy Commissioner Baramulla emphasized that the proposal seeks to acknowledge and preserve the village’s characteristic cultural practices, its specific architectural style, and its traditional economic activities. Furthermore, the initiative aims to foster heritage tourism in the region, leveraging its unique cultural assets to attract visitors and support local economies.
District Administration to Furnish Details by May 1
The district administration in Baramulla has been formally requested to submit comprehensive details pertaining to Dudran village. This includes its demographic profile, elaborated cultural practices, specific architectural features, and its historical background. The administration is also required to provide supporting photographs and recommendations for the heritage status. The deadline for submitting this crucial information has been set for May 1, 2026.
Following the submission of the requested data, the proposal is slated to be presented before the Executive Committee of the J&K Heritage Preservation and Conservation Authority. This committee is scheduled to convene on May 4, 2026, to deliberate on the merits of declaring Dudran a Heritage Village and potentially approve the designation, paving the way for enhanced conservation efforts and the promotion of its unique heritage.
