NEW DELHI: The India Meteorological Department (IMD) has issued comprehensive heatwave guidelines and advisories as temperatures soar across multiple regions of India, with particular concern for the northern and central parts of the country.
Information was available with The Chenab Times indicating that maximum temperatures in significant areas of northwest, central, and peninsular India are currently hovering between 40 and 44 degrees Celsius. The highest recorded temperature was 44.5 degrees Celsius in Sri Ganganagar, Rajasthan. In numerous locations, temperatures have been exceeding normal levels by five degrees Celsius or more, signaling a developing heat stress situation nationwide.
The IMD’s advisories emphasize critical preventive measures to mitigate the risks of heat-related illnesses such as heat exhaustion and heat stroke. These guidelines include minimizing prolonged exposure to direct sunlight, especially during the peak afternoon hours, maintaining adequate hydration, wearing light and breathable clothing, and refraining from strenuous outdoor activities during periods of high temperatures.
Special attention has been advised for vulnerable populations, including children, the elderly, and individuals with pre-existing health conditions. The department stressed the importance of early awareness and prompt action to reduce the incidence of heat-related ailments.
Forecasting future conditions, the IMD indicated that heatwave conditions are highly probable in isolated pockets across Jammu and Kashmir, Himachal Pradesh, Punjab, Haryana, Chandigarh, Delhi, Uttar Pradesh, Rajasthan, and central India in the coming days. Additionally, hot and humid conditions are anticipated over coastal and eastern regions, while warm night conditions are expected in parts of north India.
The meteorological department projected that maximum temperatures over northwest India are unlikely to see significant changes until April 27, after which a gradual fall is expected. Central and other regions may experience a gradual rise in temperatures followed by a subsequent decline within the forecast period.
