Commercial LPG Price Hike Stokes Concerns for Eateries and Tea Stalls in Erode

Erode, Tamil Nadu – The recent surge in the price of commercial Liquefied Petroleum Gas (LPG) cylinders has cast a significant shadow over the operations of eateries, tea stalls, and other small food businesses in Erode. Effective May 1, 2026, a substantial increase of ₹993 for a 19-kg commercial LPG cylinder has amplified the financial strain on these establishments, raising fears of customer resistance to price hikes and potential job cuts.

Commercial LPG cylinders serve as the primary fuel source for thousands of businesses across Erode, including food vendors and catering units. The abrupt escalation in costs is attributed by traders to a combination of factors, including global oil tensions and supply-demand dynamics. This price hike follows earlier increases in March and April, collectively placing an immense burden on businesses that operate on thin margins.

The impact of this price revision is particularly acute for small food businesses, such as dhabas, tea stalls, and budget restaurants, where cooking gas is a fundamental component of daily operations. Unlike larger restaurant chains, these enterprises often function with minimal profit per plate, making them highly susceptible to increases in input costs. The recent surge in commercial LPG prices has dramatically escalated daily operating expenses, with some vendors reporting that a single cylinder, which may last only a few days, now represents a significantly higher recurring cost.

The dilemma for these businesses is stark: absorb the increased costs, thereby squeezing already meagre profit margins, or pass the burden onto consumers. However, the latter option presents its own set of challenges. The customer base for many roadside eateries and dhabas typically comprises daily wage earners, drivers, and lower-income office workers – individuals who are themselves vulnerable to inflation and may react negatively to higher food prices. This delicate balance between operational costs and consumer affordability is now more precarious than ever.

The Federation of Hotels and Restaurants Associations of India (FHRAI) and the Hotel And Restaurant Association Western India (HRAWI) have voiced strong concerns, with Pradeep Shetty, Vice President of FHRAI and Spokesperson for HRAWI, stating that a 10 to 15 per cent hike in menu prices might be imminent. However, Shetty cautioned that even such an increase may not be sufficient to fully offset the impact of the rising LPG costs. Associations are urging the government for an immediate intervention, calling for a rollback of the price hike and stabilization of LPG prices to provide much-needed relief to the sector, which is a significant generator of employment.

The current situation highlights the fragility of the informal food economy and the tightrope walk that small businesses must perform to maintain sustainability. The decision to keep domestic LPG cylinder prices unchanged for households offers a measure of relief to families, but it places the cost burden disproportionately on commercial users. This strategy, while aiming to control household inflation, inadvertently exacerbates the financial pressures on businesses that form the backbone of India’s diverse culinary landscape.

The ongoing volatility in global energy markets, exacerbated by geopolitical tensions, continues to influence fuel prices. As long as these external factors persist, businesses dependent on commercial LPG are likely to face ongoing uncertainty and increased operating costs. The long-term implications for food prices, employment, and the broader economy remain a significant concern for stakeholders across the country.
