Government College for Women (GCW), MA Road, Srinagar, has been awarded the prestigious Gold Award for Green Campus and Sustainable Initiatives. The accolade was presented by The Climate Reality Project: India and South Asia in recognition of the institution’s sustained dedication to environmental conservation and sustainable campus practices.
The Chenab Times has learned that the award acknowledges GCW Srinagar’s significant achievements in several critical areas of environmental stewardship. These include robust air quality monitoring systems, efficient utilisation of solar energy, comprehensive waste segregation and composting processes, effective rainwater harvesting, dedicated biodiversity conservation efforts, expansion of green cover across the campus, successful heritage clean-up campaigns, and impactful plantation drives.
College authorities stated that this recognition underscores the institution’s ongoing commitment to fostering environmental responsibility and advancing sustainable development. The college community, comprising students, faculty members, and staff, has been instrumental in driving these initiatives through active participation.
Principal Prof. Yasmeen Farooq described the award as a pivotal moment for Government College for Women, Srinagar. She credited the collective efforts of the college community for their contributions to various environmental projects. Prof. Farooq expressed confidence that this recognition will further motivate the college to enhance its sustainability measures and intensify its efforts towards environmental protection and climate resilience.
The college administration also highlighted the crucial role played by the Green Campus Accreditation Committee, chaired by Prof. Farooq. Special commendation was extended to Asiya Nazir, Convener of the Eco Club and Head of the Department of Environmental Science, who served as the Team Leader during the accreditation process. Other committee members were also acknowledged for their contributions.
The announcement of the award coincided with the conclusion of the college’s Environmental Week celebrations. The week-long event, organised by the Eco Club in collaboration with the National Service Scheme (NSS) units, was held under the theme, “Inspired by Nature: For Climate, For Our Future.”
The activities during Environmental Week were designed to promote environmental awareness among students. These included campus-wide cleanliness drives, detailed waste audits, public awareness campaigns on ecological issues, biodiversity competitions, informative presentations on renewable energy sources, and extensive plantation activities. These initiatives aimed to instill a sense of environmental responsibility and encourage practical action among the student body.
The concluding function, held at the college’s Lalla Ded Auditorium, was attended by notable figures including Prof. Azra Nahid Kamili, Director and Head of the Centre of Research for Development at the University of Kashmir, and Aadil Bhat, a Climate Reality Leader and Programme Officer for The Climate Reality Project Jammu and Kashmir chapter. Their presence signified the importance and broader impact of the college’s environmental efforts within the region.
