Himachal Pradesh is actively working towards hosting Khelo India competitions, Chief Minister Sukhvinder Singh Sukhu announced on Monday. The state government’s commitment to bolstering sports infrastructure and promoting athletic participation was underscored by the inauguration of a new multipurpose sports stadium and a volleyball tournament aimed at raising drug awareness.
Information was available with The Chenab Times that Chief Minister Sukhu officially opened the Multipurpose Sports Stadium in Sanjauli. The facility, built at an investment of Rs 3.18 crore, includes an open ground suitable for various sporting events, an indoor hall, and essential amenities like a kitchen.
Further demonstrating the state’s focus on sports and community engagement, the Chief Minister also inaugurated Himachal Pradesh’s inaugural Chitta Awareness Volleyball Tournament. This event, part of the International Summer Festival in Shimla, saw the Chief Minister unveil the tournament’s running trophy and pledge a Rs 1 lakh cash prize for the victorious team. The tournament aims to leverage sports as a platform to educate youth about the dangers of drug abuse.
A significant ceremonial march-past, featuring 13 teams from across the state, was observed by Chief Minister Sukhu, who administered an oath against drug abuse to all participants. In a move to further develop local sports facilities, he announced an allocation of Rs 1 crore for the continued enhancement of Sanjauli Ground. Additionally, plans are underway to establish a Primary Health Centre (PHC) in the area and elevate the status of the Sanjauli Holi Fair to a district-level event, reflecting a broader commitment to community development and cultural preservation.
Chief Minister Sukhu elaborated on the government’s supportive policies for athletes, stating that prize money for winners of international competitions has been increased. A new policy is expected soon to provide rewards for national-level sportspersons, a measure intended to provide significant impetus to sports development within Himachal Pradesh. Preparations are also in advanced stages for the construction of a new stadium at Ghatasani, near Shimla, with an estimated cost of Rs 10 crore, signaling substantial investment in future sporting talent.
To ensure athletes are adequately supported during their training and competition schedules, the state government has implemented a daily diet allowance. Athletes participating in events within Himachal Pradesh receive Rs 400 per day, while those competing outside the state are provided with Rs 500 per day. Recognizing the logistical challenges of longer journeys, the government will also facilitate air travel for distances exceeding 200 kilometers, aiming to remove barriers to participation and encourage athletes to compete at higher levels.
Local MLA Harish Janartha acknowledged the Chief Minister’s vision, highlighting the importance of engaging youth in sports as a crucial strategy to deter drug abuse. The occasion was also graced by the presence of Shimla Mayor Surinder Chauhan and other distinguished guests, who were in attendance to witness the inauguration of the sports facilities and the commencement of the awareness tournament.
