Pune, India – The Pune district administration has announced a 10-day ban on the entry of heavy and multi-axle vehicles within the city limits in an effort to alleviate traffic congestion and enhance road safety. The restrictions are set to be enforced from midnight of June 15 to midnight of June 24, covering the entire area under the Pune Police Commissionerate.
The decision, issued by Pune District Collector Jitendra Dudi, follows a proposal by the Pune Traffic Police. The proposal highlighted the escalating traffic issues and a concerning rise in accidents involving heavy vehicles on key city roads. This measure is part of a trial to assess the impact of diverting transit traffic away from the urban center.
Pune serves as a crucial transit corridor for vehicles traveling between major cities such as Mumbai, Solapur, Ahilyanagar, Nashik, and Satara. Traffic police have pointed out that a significant number of heavy trucks, trailers, and containers passing through Pune are exacerbating congestion on roads that are already strained by rapid urbanization and a growing number of private vehicles.
According to official data released in 2026, Pune city has recorded 30 fatal accidents involving heavy vehicles, resulting in 31 deaths. The Mundhwa-Kharadi corridor has been identified as an area of particular concern due to heavy traffic movement.
To manage the flow of goods and essential services, vehicles requiring entry for loading, unloading, or other commercial activities will need prior approval from the Pune Traffic Branch, at least 72 hours in advance. These permitted vehicles will be allowed to operate only between 11 p.m. and 6 a.m. through specified routes.
Alternative routes have been designated for transit heavy vehicles. For instance, vehicles traveling from Solapur towards Mumbai will be diverted through routes including Kedgaon Chaufula, Nhavare, Shikrapur, and Chakan, or via Uruli Kanchan, Koregaon Mul, Ashtapur, Shikrapur, and Chakan. Similarly, vehicles moving from Mumbai to Solapur will be rerouted via Talegaon Dabhade, Chakan, Shikrapur, Nhavare, and Kedgaon Chaufula. Traffic from Mumbai to Ahilyanagar will be directed through Talegaon, Chakan, Khed, Manchar, and Alephata, with an additional option via Nashik Phata, Bhosari, Chakan, and Shikrapur.
The ban will not apply to vehicles providing essential services, such as those transporting fuel, milk, and agricultural produce, as well as other emergency supplies. These essential service vehicles are permitted to enter the city between 11 p.m. and 6 a.m. via designated routes.
The Pune Traffic Police have emphasized the need for drivers to strictly adhere to the designated routes to ensure the effectiveness of the diversion plan. The current measure is part of a broader effort by the Pune Municipal Corporation and traffic authorities to implement new traffic control measures and improve overall road safety within the city.
The administration’s move comes after consultations with the Pune Rural Police, who have agreed to trial these diversions to assess their impact on traffic flow and congestion. This temporary ban is intended to provide valuable data on the feasibility of rerouting transit traffic to ease city congestion and enhance commuter safety.
The Pune district administration has previously implemented similar restrictions, including a ban on heavy vehicles during peak hours on the Katraj Bypass Road and experimental prohibitions on heavy vehicles. These measures reflect ongoing efforts to manage the city’s complex traffic dynamics, exacerbated by rapid development and a high volume of commercial transport.
